What breed would y'all suggest for the best chance of getting a broody hen you could depend on, if something like that even exists? In the 10 years or so that I've kept RIR's and/or Red Sex-links, I've not had but one that would set long enough to hatch a clutch. I want something that'll take care of her chicks, yet not be a bully in the general population, and big enough to handle 6-10 large eggs. Any favorites?

My Ameraucana is my best ever broody, but I don't think they are know for being good broody's in general... it's a crap shoot, really, in the larger breeds... but I have heard that if they're hatchery stock, your chances of a good broody is significantly smaller...

But if the chhoks are locked up in the coop at night, there's no need to worry about a coon in the run...

Also true...all comes down to personal preference, I guess. I just feel more secure with the wire overhead.

That's a lot of broodies! Gonna let any of them sit?

No broodies here, just a bunch of teenagers and some really ratty oldsters. Didn't know a hen could molt out all of her flight feathers at once - she has just one or two one each side and looks terrible. Coop looks like there was a massive pillowfight.

10-4 on the pillow fight. My rooster looks like someone tried to hang him; half the feathers on his neck are missing...down to bare skin. Anybody heard of Naked Necks being used for sex-linking?
