What breed would y'all suggest for the best chance of getting a broody hen you could depend on, if something like that even exists? In the 10 years or so that I've kept RIR's and/or Red Sex-links, I've not had but one that would set long enough to hatch a clutch. I want something that'll take care of her chicks, yet not be a bully in the general population, and big enough to handle 6-10 large eggs. Any favorites?
Also true...all comes down to personal preference, I guess. I just feel more secure with the wire overhead.Good points, and true... but using that is more pricey and harder to deal with, especially if the run is wide...
But if the chhoks are locked up in the coop at night, there's no need to worry about a coon in the run...
I've heard the sameMy Ameraucana is my best ever broody, but I don't think they are know for being good broody's in general... it's a crap shoot, really, in the larger breeds... but I have heard that if they're hatchery stock, your chances of a good broody is significantly smaller...
I've heard the same
Too bad you're so far away; I'd make you a deal for one that you couldn't refuseSpeaking of... my Am's sister has now gone broody... am up to 4 broodys now, 2 Silkies, an Am and a Marans... broodiness is a contagious disease at our place...![]()
10-4 on the pillow fight. My rooster looks like someone tried to hang him; half the feathers on his neck are missing...down to bare skin. Anybody heard of Naked Necks being used for sex-linking?That's a lot of broodies! Gonna let any of them sit?
No broodies here, just a bunch of teenagers and some really ratty oldsters. Didn't know a hen could molt out all of her flight feathers at once - she has just one or two one each side and looks terrible. Coop looks like there was a massive pillowfight.
