hi. i have a spangled banty hen that i have let lay for 5 days now and she has 5 eggs and will not set on them? how long till she goes broody? i was told to let her keep laying until she sets? any advice would help. thank you.

Someone else said this, and I think it is good advice. Go out and get an incubator. The more expensive it is, the sooner your broody will set.

Seriously, she may or she may not set her eggs. Many never do.

I think if you just leave her alone she will do the rest. She may lay as many as 10 before she goes to setting.

thanks for the advice. since i am new to all of this whenever she does set. then what? do i need to do anything else? i guess one day i just wake up to chicks?

i am not really sure. i can try to upload a pic and maybe you can help me identify her?

Poor Greenhead! You want a broody, but - no! - the girls will not cooperate. I do not need any additional hatchlings & all I get are broodies. And less eggs! Welcome to the world of hens who will not do as they are told!

I have a silkie that will set on air, or sometimes 2 eggs, sometimes it takes 8 eggs or more before going broody.

We are dealing with a hormonal female here, & my best advice is let her decide, & keep your fingers out of reach if you are checking on the number of eggs she is sitting on.
