Yes, there's a normal roof overhang on the all-mesh side. It's just the front that doesn't have one. There's also a six-foot privacy fence and vastly overgrown tree/vine combo. It's pretty sheltered.
There will be 17 birds in all, nine hens from one to five years and eight pullets who are coming up on eight weeks old. They spent their first night out there last night. The big girls will be moved in tomorrow or Saturday, late night. Taking it slow seems to be working well; the little ones hang out separately, but when they mingle there's very little pecking. My backyard is just under a half acre.
