Shed to coop conversion

Here are some photos of the window areas of shed and my windows I found:


These are my windows, I have a dozen different sizes but the first one is 22" wide which is the exact width between the studs in shed.


First pic is on the outside of shed. This is where I plan on putting in 2 windows or just making that one larger. This is also the side where the run will be attached. Second photo is the opposite side if the shed where I want to put in a widow. Third pic is where that window is already cut out, its just framed and covered with a screen.

I'd put aprons on the 2 walls you can get to the outside of and go straight down a good foot or more on the other walls from the inside.

One of the walls is actually the front of the shed, so the double doors and the other is where I plan on putting in the run. The run will definately have and apron all around it.

5.) I have tons of storm windows in my basement, they came with the house. I would like to put in one large window on each side of shed where the coop will be. I'm struggling a little with this part as I have zero construction experience. I do know that I would like the windows to prop open from the bottom.

Will the window fit between the existing studs?

And here is a photo of where I can insert it. I can also place one next to it so I'll have 2 windows on that side. Inside and outside.

I think you're right on target with converting the shed yourself! We did the same thing last year. It cost us about $800 total and most of that was for the run. My hubby asked at a local building site and brought home a lot of free lumber scraps. We picked up the storage cabinet from the side of the road and the feeders/nest boxes we made out of old cabinet pieces we pulled from our old kitchen. The concrete bricks which are the foundation of the run (over aproned hardware cloth) we dug up from a friend's house. We didn't do much to the structure itself - just hardware cloth over the windows and shavings on the floor. The birds handled both 100 degree summer heat and 0 degree winter weather without a problem. We leave the windows open all year round but I did put their red heat lamp in this winter. I'm excited to see your progress so please keep posting! P.S. We have renters in the back as well.

I love your conversion! Thanks for the inspiration! And yes, the run will cost the most money but I think the space will be great for 5-6 chcikens. Coop part will be about 8X12' and the run will be about the same.

You could frame out the opening with a couple of 2x4's for the top and bottom and staple (fence staples not stapler kind) hardware cloth on the inside then hinge the top of the window so you can pull it out and put a prop stick in to hold it open during warmer weather.

This was my plan, I just wasn't sure how to frame the window out and I was a bit concerned about making the window airtight? Or does it not need to be airtight?

Doesn't need to be air tight but should have slanted sill at the bottom to shed water.
You may have to remove some stops in order for it too swing out.
