Have four four-week olds at the moment, and will soon be transitioning them from a huge dog crate in my garage to outside. My last batch of chicks are living the good free-range life at my moms place, and these girls will join up with that flock in the fall. In the mean time, I thought it would be brilliant to build a shed (from a kit, and we need the additional space) and use it for the chickens for the summer....now I'm realizing it's really going to be getting hot in there! We've already got fixed windows installed, caulked and nailed (and they're in a bad spot high on the walls, if I just screened them and it rained it would be a big mess). I'm thinking about installing a frame that would be screened with chicken wire or similar, and positioned as sort of an inner screen door, so one of the double doors would be fully ventilated, but the outer door could be closed over it in bad weather or if I got predator paranoid. The 3x4x5' crate will be within the shed anyway, and it's lined with hardware cloth to prevent interested paws.
Anybody else have a part-time coop? I welcome suggestions. I love having chicks in the spring, but I may have to hold off next year or more since I don't think I can eat eggs fast enough if our flock population keeps doubling
