Hi all I’m just setting up or first coop that’s been converted from from an old wooden shed.

I’m considering using thick black builders plastic on the floor to aid with cleaning the coop out. Is there any disadvantage to using this?

I live in Ireland so the winters can be damp and wet.

Many thanks

You could use plastic to cover the floor, but when it gets torn by the scratching action of sharp toe nails, you will likely hate yourself for not thinking this through.

A better solution would be to lay a scrap of vinyl flooring or sand and seal with a tough spar varnish.

You will need to install bedding over any flooring as cushioning for the chickens as they hop down from their perch. Not to do so will result in feet and leg injuries.

If you wish to have an easy cleanup, I suggest a few inches of fine sand. I started out with wood shavings in my coops, and at the suggestion of someone here on BYC, I switched to sand years ago. It's been the best decision. I am able to keep the coops clean with just a cat box scooper. I also use poop boards under the perches to catch most of the poop, and this really helps speed up cleanup.
