Shell-less egg.

Thanks for the help. I have a flock of birds of multiple generations. Today 1 bird a new layer who has probably laid a dozen eggs so far[she is my only green egg layer] was in the driveway and laid a egg without a shell. I haven't seen this before and was wondering if I need to be worried about anything. We are in the middle of a cold spell[single digits]??I haven't noticed anything strange going on lately. I appreciate any useful input, thanks

I have had this happen 2 or 3 times. It has always been a new layer. It's nothing to worry about unless this continues. But it is not unusual for this to happen.

Was it a soft shelled egg or truly shelless, as in it looked like a cracked egg white and yolk? If the latter, then check her vent for cracked shell. It could be very harmful.

If it has a soft-membrane shell, then you are A-okay.

It was no shell.

Was it intact inside the membrane, like a water balloon...
...or just loose yolk and albumen(whites)?

What all and how exactly are you feeding?
Do you have a separate feeder with Ouster Shell available?

I had one once...no shell, just an intact membrane. weird but never happened again. I wouldn't worry unless it repeats.

I've had a couple over the years that are just inside of a membrane. I still eat mine, but you have to eat them pretty much the day you find them. Without a shell they dry up exceptionally fast!! They can happen most often with very young or very old layers. In my case, it was a four-year old laying hen.

Thanks for the posts....so the egg was just like a cracked egg. Tonite I inspected her and found something sticking out of her vent a little that broke when I tried to remove. Ultimately I was able to pull out all of a collapsed soft egg shell. I will keep an eye on her for infections etc in the days to come. Tomorrow she is due for her next egg. I have seen eggs without the shell just a membrane maybe twice before. The girls have a complete diet including free choice oyster shells, herbs, and all their used egg shells crushed up, all the house scraps, etc.

Might want to crate her overnight, so you can see what comes out.

What is their regular feed, brand/model/protein and calcium percentages?
That should be 'complete' along with plain water...
....herbs and house scraps might not be a good thing.
The oyster shell mixed with egg shells in a separate feeder is good,
if they are consuming them.
