I went out yesterday morning like I always do to let the girls into their pen, feed them, etc. My roost is over the top of the nest boxes so the top serves as a poop board. Someone laid a shell-less egg on top of the box! What is the deal? They eat layer feed, Boss and treats. They always have free choice calcium available to them. Most of the egg shells that I get are really hard.

Do I have a problem chicken out there? I think I may know who the culprit is, she's always been a little odd....

Any advice? Do I need to do anything? Or is it a fluke?

From what I can gather, it's just a fluke - though not long before two of my older girls on two seperate occasions developed ascites, they started laying almost exclusively "funny" eggs like that despite high quality layer crumbles and plenty of calcium in the diet. I'm guessing in young, healthy birds it's just an error in the egglaying process that happens from time to time, but if you start seeing it consistently, I would be worried.

I had this happen also sometimes one egg starts to develop before the first one is laid and comes out with no shell some times it is just a oops I would keep my eye on her and hopefully this is just a one time deal.

The bird that I think may have done it is a little off. She has one side of her body slightly higher than the other and has just always seemed a little weird. I hope she doesn't have any internal abnormalities. Not that I can do anything about it if she does.
