What are the opinions about feeding chickens their own shells for calcium? I advocate not to, because of the idea of it stimulating them to eat eggs. Your thoughts?

I wash and save my eggshells in a big bowl and when I get a bunch of them and they're good and dry, I grind them in a coffee grinder and feed them back to the hens.

I've heard you should crush or grind them so they don't start pecking at their own eggs.

Bella has given a "rubber egg" the past two days (actually, she dropped them in the henhouse under the roost at night) but I think it's from the Sevin Dusting I gave her last week. I tossed the eggs.

I do notice she eats a LOT of calcium when I leave it out.

I save my egg shells and have my egg clients save me them as well. I let them dry and grind them with a mortar and pestle. I toss the ground shells in with their feed and mix it in well, about a tablespoon daily for 20 hens. Since I have been doing this I have not gotten anymore soft shells or paper shells. I feed an organic 20% feed and they get a good amount of organic garden scraps and supervised ranging.
