My vet said soft shells are VERY normal for the beginning and often the end of a laying season. I, too, have been getting a number of soft shells from my Sapphire Gem. She started out laying double yolks and a soft and now she generally lays a single yolk and then later 2 soft shells. She dropped 2 soft shells at my feet last night. So weird. She has been laying since the middle of January. So I’ve been getting a lot of shell-less or soft shell eggs lately from my hens. They just started to lay starting maybe about a month ago.
I know new layers have more issues because their bodies are getting the hang of things, but how long does it usually take for them to normalize?
They are on both layer pellets and I have a dish of oyster shells.
And I’m not 100% sure my Orpington is laying yet, but I’m more concerned about my two ISA Browns. They’ve been popping out almost an egg a day and I’m afraid they’re bodies are burning out quickly.
Is this pretty normal?
The chickens we get are bred to lay more eggs than their little bodies can handle and the vet is seeing more and more reproductive issues. If I get to the soft shell eggs before they break I just scramble them and feed them back to the hens.
