Shelling pecans to get halves

Not only don't I know how to pronounce them -- I can't get the darn things out of the shells in halves. I almost get there, then they break as I'm pulling them out. Help!

I can do it SOMETIMES but most of the time they come out in pieces...

Ugh... I didn't get reply notifications. I've tried a hammer and basic plier style nutcracker. What has been working best for me (probably 10% success rate) is to tap the nuts lightly end-on with the hammer, then crack them the rest of the way with the nutracker. Using just the hammer was pulverizing them, and just the cracker wouldn't crack them enough.

That's just a set of hand pruners like for trimming bushes or trees.
