Despite my setbacks in chicken keeping.. I have enjoyed watching the personalities develop of my little flock. Today, my dad told me about something Artemis, my arucana, did. While we're worried that Artemis is showing qualities that might require her being renamed to Apollo, I still found it funny none the less.

Dad put our predator-deterrant fake owl down on the ground while he was working in the yard.. while his back was turned he suddenly heard squawking and turned to see Artemis attempting to flog and chest bump the fake owl (who was not impressed by her 'vicious' display). Having shown the fake owl who was boss, she strutted away and returned to eating bugs with the rest of the chicks.

We're not sure if she was brave or stupid as I'm sure any real owl would have gladly taken this chick who was happy to throw herself at him.

Here's a pic of our little huntress:

She sure looks like a hen but I've never seen one become aggressive with another animal. One might get aggressive with another chicken but everything else they run away from. I am not sure old old she is but she may be a he.

I know.. that was why I commented that we're worried we might have to rename her "Apollo" as opposed to "Artemis". She has shown a high dominant streak, but her comb is still a pale pink and her wattles are tiny. I would think, for a cockerel, they should have shown more development and color by now.

edit: she's a bit over 2 months old btw

I also say she is a hen!!

I have a brave hen, she is the only that wonders away from the flock. She chases kids, rabbits, bugs.. Floggs basketballs & stares at my husband working in the garden like hes a pork chop!

We think shes smart & very dominent!! And shes not mean at all!!

My SLW hen Big Mama will challenge anything except people to protect all of the chickens. She is usually before Lil Dude, our only roo haha. But she is also my big baby and loves to be held and petted and loved on. This is her. I would say yours is a hen too. She is just a protector!
