Oh it's loud! The recording is from far away and even at that distance it's louder in person. She'll go on non stop for an hour if we're on the porch and won't let her out. Sounds like a dying pterodactyl! She sounds like the chicken in the video but I think hestia is louder. She also crows at hens who have annoyed her and has scared of a fox with her ridiculously loud crow.

quails are quiet, they said. (rooster boy is not quiet)i can here my hen hestia from my house 150metres away!
Well I was only letting them out so early because they were stuck in a smaller run until I got the big one done because I like them to have a lot more than the average requirements. And during that time they've taken to getting all over the porch (defeated two different gates I put up), tearing my plants up, raiding the garden until my husband reinforced it, wandering further and further off on our 8 acres and we ended up with an egg stash in the doghouse, one under the porch and one we missed which resulted in nine chicks behind the shed. I have 37 chickens now. Luckily the neighbors going to take the surprise batch. But yeah things were getting quite out of control having them out all day. But I have them to sell eggs to my clients. So we prefer to keep them in there until late afternoon early evening and then let them out to free range until they go to bed. Hence the reason I got such a massive run. It will easily hold twice as many as I'm putting in there. Treats help. Some, but only until they're gone. We are still working on the large run as far as enrichment toys and entertainment. And I sure hope that helps! She gets her way with us doing this and the other hens. I fear she has just learned that she can throw her weight around by driving everyone insane. I'm telling you she'll get more carried away, but they never do it for the recordingThat is one unhappy chickenI’m familiar with the disgruntled “ak ak ak ak ak ak akkkkkk”s but not to that degree!! She sure is a complainer lol that being said, is something you could do to enrich her run or distract her in the mornings before they get let out? Maybe like give them some scratch or mash every morning? I know that would just be temporary, but maybe forming new morning habits could help? Is not wanting them out due to predators and not having the ability to watch them while they’re out?
I'm hoping she'll go back to what we considered normal for her which was still way worse than any of our other hens. But the hour+ non-stop when we're sitting on the porch and she sees us and wants out is just something I can't imagine going on foreverI named one of my chickens after my sister. She doesn’t stop talking and complaining loudly all day long…she being both my hen and my sister![]()
