Shetland Chicks Arrived

This morning the Post office called Shetland Hens and a couple of CL for added diversity in my own CL flock. Sorry for poor photo I wanted a quick photo before I left them in the brooder to rest.

And they’re laying. Bluest egg I’ve seen laid here.

Never heard of Shetlands. About to go learn on Google. Good luck with them!

Thank you. It's a blue egg layer from the place that gave us the Shetland Pony. Mine are mostly black and, let's just agree that, they are amazing and beautiful

They are nine days today. My little flock of baby Shetlands is very vocal and active but also docile for handling. They are the only baby peeps I’ve ever had to figure out that paper towels go under the feet when it is rolled across the brooder floor during cleaning time. They seem to be very smart and happy little chicks.

Five months now and I’m amazed at how quiet and docile they are Not a great layer but I didn’t get them for production. Getting an egg every other day or every two days. One thing I’ve noticed is they have the same problem as Polish, their eyesight is hindered by the tops. I love the tops though so I’ll be working on a top hat like this hen’s which stays out of her line of sight

They are also rumpless and tailed. I have one cockerel that is rumpless in reserve and the tailed cockerel is with the hens now.

I lost the thread too! Wow that’s some blue egg. Never seen any that blue. How old was yours when she started laying? My one little Shetland Hen has started to develop larger wattles so hopefully she’ll be laying soon. I’ll post a photo when she does.

They are just over 5 weeks now and I find them irresistible. A very calm and easy going, yet curious little flock. A couple of cockerels are standing out now.

Well hello world My first Shetland hatch Seven pullet eggs set. Four made it to lock down Two have hatched, one has pipped and one is in the correct position to pip.

I lost the thread too! Wow that’s some blue egg. Never seen any that blue. How old was yours when she started laying? My one little Shetland Hen has started to develop larger wattles so hopefully she’ll be laying soon. I’ll post a photo when she does.

What a beautiful little one. I love their personalities. One of mine was fully five months when she started to lay. The second one followed about ten days later. The third hen hasn’t started yet. They were hatched March 29, 21. And that egg!!!! Finally I got a very blue egg out of my blue egg layers. It’s the most blue ever here and it was also the only one. Every other egg has been more subdued. Like she emptied half her toner cartridge on that first one
