My only Shetland Hen, Fiona, laid her first egg today! Photos attached. Got her as a started pullet in the beginning of July where she was somewhere between 3 to 5 months of age at the time, per the breeder. Now here we are in the beginning of December and she finally laid her first egg!
Looks a lot bluer in person. Photo of the egg by itself and then next to an olive Egger and Marans egg for comparison, as well as the lovely lady herself!
Pretty good size for a first egg, too, 50 g! So excited!:wee:wee:wee

What's a shetland hen?
It's a breed from the Shetland Islands, (think Shetland ponies). Thought to be descended from Araucanas that were ship wrecked off the islands centuries ago. They are an endangered breed. Most stock in the US is from Green Fire Farms.
I got mine from a local breeder that sourced his flock from GFF.😊

I'm hoping to get some Shetland pullets at the end of the month and going to visit them this weekend!
Trying to thing of suitable names... Fiona is my partner's boss but as he's retiring soon it might be cathartic! ☺️
Good luck with them! 😊
I ended up selling my one little hen. Focusing more on the Silkies. The eggs were amazingly blue. We picked Fiona as it’s a Scottish name and the Shetland Islands are off of Scotland. Also a nod to Shrek!
