Hi friends. I just got to thinking and wanted to ask you all a question about chick shipping. Do your chicks usually come express or priority mail? I know we don't get to choose which one or if there is really even a difference between the two methods.I was just wondering how your chicks came? also is there even a difference between express and priority? if yes what?? Thanks in advance for your answers. you all are wonderful!

I ordered from Meyers Poultry in PA in Dec. they shipped priority...they shipped Monday, got to the post office on Wed. Sadly they all died on the trip. When the hatchery replaced them I begged and pleaded for them to send them express. They told me it would make no difference, that they take the exact same route and I'd be wasting my money. 3 different postal workers told me that was not true and that express is overnight. So I insisted Meyer send them express. I paid the extra money and said "just humor me! If it's a waste, then too bad for me." They agreed and guess what? They got here overnight! And all of them made it safely! So I recommend finding a hatchery that will send them express. Some of them will, some won't. And I've read the same thing that Meyers said about express being the same, but for me that was not true.

Yes, Express is overnight. I'm in CA too, I order from MPC and my chicks are always shipped express. I usually have them in my hands in 18 hours or less, haven't had a DOA or had one die right after shipping yet. They ship out Monday afternoon, I have them by 11:00 or noon on Tues. And I keep using MPC for that reason, I just don't want any hatchery shipping chicks to me any other way.

wow I was wondering because Meyers told me they WOULD be sending Express shipping.I'm pretty sure I paid for it because shipping was a bit over 50.00$ for 7 chicks. This is why I was wondering. I'm VERY greatful they choose express with me so far away and I felt they did have the chicks best interest in mind. I really hope they do get here over night!

I just double checked my invoice and where it says delivery it says " Ship Express" so I'm very greatful they are doing that. I did not have to ask. Thank God. I'm thinking because I'm so far away it's likely something they do because if it was shipped otherwise the chicks wouldn't have a chance at survivability.

I know this is not a recent post, BUT I AM GOING THROUGH THIS WITH A DIFF HATCHERY. CONSISTENTLY trying to convince me to NOT USE express even if I get a guarantee that priority does not provide. I think for some odd reason it makes them responsible for a specific drop off timeline that they do not want to adhere to. I hate to say its laziness, but why offer the option then literally break your back to make someone believe the express shipment is not necessary. I HAVE SMELLED A RAT FOR A MONTH NOW. THEY GET AN ENDLESS CYCLE OF DEAD BIRDY BOXES AND MORE PURCHASES. I think they make out better if a bird or two doesnt make it. So many order under the minimums and do the extra fees. So few are actually comped that you are forced to add more birds to the order.

Every dead birdy yields another order of 3. So for every 1 that dies they get a person to pay for 2 more to ship it. Almost thinking in a sick way it is profitable for a single bird in every box to be dead. Almost everyone I have seen on a thread just gets more. Its just what happens. Given hat scenario, they make more profit off of dead than alive is a complete possibility. NOT A PERFECT THEORY, but more probable than not in each order to have an issue. Between deformities and spraddle, heck, they could ship you a bad bird purposely to get a second order out of you.

Sad,but potentially very true. Esp when they are making it a lot harder now to 'prove' losses and get your credits even. I speak on this with three boxes in a row coming DOA even in the 2 day window. AND SO MANY SO FSR WITH DEFORMITIES I AM CLOSE TO ISSUING CALL TO GAME COMMISSION. I AM SO SAD ABOUT IT ALL.

If a hatchery drops off 2 packages of chicks for 2 different customers and they arrive at the airport at the same time the one who paid for the fastest shipping gets put on the plane first.

The Hatchery I ordered my first batch from shipped priority or express based on how many you ordered, under 10 chicks they did Express and over 10 chicks they did priority I assume because the more chicks the safer and warmer they are in the package so there's less of an urgency to get them where they're going, but for me it really didn't make a difference because I live somewhere rural so even with Express it's next day to the local Express Hub but after some changes at a federal level with the Postal Service, they no longer do afternoon trucks just morning trucks for express for Rural Last Mile deliveries so if the Box doesn't get there by like 5am it's going to sit on the loading dock at that Regional Hub until the next morning instead of going out that afternoon like it used to to your local post office same day. If you're concerned call your local post office and ask them where the regional hub is and if they still do afternoon trucks or not. If they do afternoon trucks priority is going to be plenty quick

I've had zero deformities or spraddle leg in any of the breeds I've chosen in 5 years of raising chickens. My chicks came from a feed store and 2 different hatcheries (none had deformities ,died enroute or died after they arrived) I also hatched a few healthy chicks using a broody. Deformities can be breed specific (but it doesn't mean this was the case in your chicks) I'm very sorry for your loss.
