Hi,

I was looking at all the call duck sites and ran across one that waits until the call ducklings are 2 to 3 weeks old before they ship them. But because I suffer from CRS, I forgot which member it was. I sure it was a BYC member. Please help me locate this member and their site.

Thanks,

I will defer somewhat to other breeders of Calls specifically, as someone like Mrs. Turbo would know a lot more about Calls than I. I do raise most of the other bantam ducks though (some of which were bred from Calls) and I would *NEVER* in a million years ship 2-3 week old ducklings. To me, that would be recipe for disaster. I would think that would be even more dangerous than shipping day olds (something that very few do either because that is dangerous too for tiny little ducklings). The reason I would be reluctant being duckings that are started have a very high need for feed and especially water. Much more so than other types of poultry.

If you ship a a tiny little duckling that is only a few weeks old, you run the risk of it going without water for a few days at one of the most crucial stages of development. Again, to me, it sounds like it could be a disaster. Now, maybe Calls have some additional protection that I am not aware of that would make them hardy enough to ship at that age, but I would never even be willing to try that if someone asked me to with any of my bantam ducks. When they are shipped as day olds (again, something that a lot of breeders of bantam ducks won't do either), they at least have the nutrition and hydration provided by the yolk.

If you check postal regulations about shipping live birds - they can only be shipped within a day of being hatched or as an adult. So they would have to be shipped through another carrier and I do not know of another carrier that allows the shipping of live birds.

I think Mrs. Turbo and Turbo shipped theres around 2 weeks old( could be wrong, but I dont think they sell ducklings anymore. She can tell you better than me Ive never shipped ducklings). They are very week and some need extra care to keep them alive there first few days. 2 weeks gives them a better chance in shipping!

Maybe it was Wapsiwaterfowl!

Ooh, Dennis' ducks are pricey! But worth it for the quality. I have a hen hatched from his eggs. My others came from Jerry Foley (Mrs. Turbo) and Tom Schmidt. This year I am only breeding Butterscotch. I have shipped lots of call ducklings in the last 3-4 years, I wait until they are 3-4 weeks old. Rarely ever had a problem. I put soft fruit in the boxes for food/hydration. I don't ship day-old anything.

Hi all....just found this thread. We did ship ducklings before....more like 3-4 weeks old in the single stall horizon boxes. We would cut up apple for them to snack on. We had such a bad hatch last year, as did other breeders, it was just a mess trying to fill orders and keep enough ducklings for us to grow out for showing. The ducklings did fine when shipped at that age. We never lost any in shipping and Dennis has also had good luck shipping at that age. The advantage of buying them young is you could end up with a $200 show duck for a fraction of the price. Luck of the draw I guess....but even then you would have a nice bloodline to start with if you got some from Dennis and ended up with only breeder quality. We don't sell ducklings anymore. We start culling about 3-4 months old. Jerry always wants to keep everything to grow out......I have to remind him of our massive feed bill every month.

I did get your email....I thought Jerry replied and if he didn't I will knock him around for you.....LOL
Glad they are showing well. Looking at the pictures they really filled out for you, I am so glad. You going to make it to Oklahoma for the Nationals this year? We like going every year, but not fun bringing a 3 month old to a show....been there and it will be a long drive this year.
