Shipping dogs

Not sure I'd trust any airline shipping dogs anymore. Too many (news) have died, flown to another Country, wrong State, lost in the "mail" ... I flew from AZ to HI with my Chi in Nov '10, she died in Apr '11 ... The stress was too much for her :(

You stated - That said, I will be spending Thanksgiving through Christmas with my friend in California. The board bill for that period of time would be about the same as the air fare to take her with me. Why not drive your basset to your friends?

Why don't I drive her? I just got back from driving to Columbus Ohio and back which is a ten hour drive from my place, one way. I'm a nervous wreck. To drive from here to where she lives in California is something like 30 hours drive time and part of that is through Los Angeles. No thank you.

I used to fly puppies all over the US.
Ours flew out of MCI. They fly as cargo. We used American airlines and never had any issues.
We bought our crates from Wal-Mart but your friend probably doesn't care so much about the crate so I'd find a decent one on CL.

Hear & understand about driving through LA, that's a white knuckle ride.
Back in Nov '98, drove from TN to CA in one night, never ever drove freeways ever much less in the mainland traffic ... My gloves were dripping wet by the time we got to CA.

Hey!
Many airlines will ship dogs and have the requirements on their websites.
Here's a relatively recent list https://www.purewow.com/travel/best-dog-friendly-airlines though it's before the whole "personal support peacock" fiasco so some things might have changed.
You usually just have to get a quick exam and health certificate from the vet within 10 days of travel.
Hope that helps!

Thank you for your response. I did go online and found a lot of the information I needed. The airline was helpful in answering my questions. I found a nice big dog crate on craigslist for $30 which was way less than what one would cost new. This one was used only once. I know I need to get health papers and vaccination record shortly before she leaves. I am planning on waiting until September to ship her because of the heat.
