Hi. It has come to my attention that you legally(?) can't ship eggs without NPIP certification (or vet papers/equivalent?).
I have been shipping eggs WITHOUT NPIP through UPS for ages now. I did not know you had to be NPIP for eggs, I thought that was only for shipping chicks/birds.
I sent a package of eggs out through USPS, 2 day shipping, and they have been stuck at the major facility for 4 days now. I assume it's because they're not permitted, but I don't know. I wrote "hatching eggs" on the box because I wanted USPS to know to be careful.
Now I am worried that I am going to get in trouble with USPS.
I'm just curious if anyone has made this amateur mistake, and if so, how did it turn out? I am internally freaking out because I don't want to get in trouble. If I had known you can't ship eggs, I wouldn't have done it. What are the consequences? Does anyone have any insight on this?
I don't know if this is truly the reason why they haven't moved to the next facility, I am just assuming due to the research I did today about eggs in transit.
Also, does this mean most of the eggs on Ebay are being shipped illegally?
Thanks 😩

There are loopholes for eggs, & birds. Eating eggs, & meat birds don't require it🤫.

I'm sure you're fine and it has nothing to do with them being eggs.
I buy stuff off ebay that ships USPS and lately everything is arriving late. And that is why, my packages have been sitting at major hubs for several days for some reason.
FYI I've heard of egg sellers saying they won't write anything like "hatching eggs" or "fragile" on boxes because when they have they end up getting damaged more often then unmarked packages. Idk if it's true or not but maybe skip writing eggs on yours for that reason.

Same. I Have had several packages arrive much later than they were supposed to over the last couple weeks

I was NPIP tested last year and sent my application in for the NPIP certificate. The WI State Ag Dept. called me when they got my application and said in the state of Wisconsin, we can ship anything, chicks, eggs, etc., within the state, with nothing provided we're not commercial. She said NPIP certification is however needed if you want to show birds in Wisconsin.

So I went to visit the USPS. I had a customer in NY wanting hatching eggs, so I asked her about NPIP being needed if the eggs leave Wisconsin. She didn't know what I was talking about. I explained it. She said a lot of things have their own requirements, and USPS has some requirements too, but they do not have anything to do with any certifications of chicks or eggs. She said she knows people have shipped all kinds of things in addition to chicks, like snakes, aquarium fish, etc., and they just make sure things like this aren't sitting in an unheated or un-air-conditioned area, depending on the season.

That said, who's doing the checking?

I got 6-7 hatching egg orders shipped to me this past year from exhibition or show breeders, and only one had an NPIP # on the box. One put "Caution - Live Fish" stickers on her box.

I recently had four adult chickens flown to me in bio boxes from NY. I know the breeder is NPIP, as hers is on her website, but she didn't put anything on her boxes.

I do know if they ever come out with the technology for the NPIP testing to include Marek's and Avian Influenza, then I would definitely care that the chicks, chickens, and eggs I buy are NPIP tested, but right now, I don't.
