Hi.Please tell me your experience with shipping/ recieving live birds. I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has had some experience with it . How did it work? Insurance form the post office? Safety issues? I will be having a live chick shipped to me(Young adult) Thanks!

p.s, i hope i posted this in the right section. Sorry if i did not.

I've had live birds shipped to me, young adults and adults. I've not had any issues. They get pretty thirsty, so have some water availble for them when you get them home.

Oh and I only had to go to the post office to pick them up. The post office will call you to get them unless you've made other arrangements. I just sign for them and away I go.

Thanks for the feedback. I will be planning my whole day around this special little delivery .They will be shipped to my post office. I am so Excited!

What are the best fruits and veggies to send with a bird?
I heard apple, as it is less messy and squishy than Melon, but I was thinking Pears would be good also....

Also just read about using alfalfa as the bedding, so they get more greenery while they are in transit. Anyone had any luck with that?

I have gotten all kinds of animals shipped to me and I have started shipping ducks and geese this year. I have shipped them with a package of frozen cooked vegetables so that there is some built in moisture. But, I got chicks this morning and they were shipped with apple. I've also gotten geese shipped with lettuce.

I've actually shipped two sets of birds to two locations that were supposed to be TWO DAY Express Mail, but the post office, in both instances, went that extra mile to get them there in one day. Upstate NY, it was a small enough community that they know one another, so one post office called another one to advise that birds were coming and an employee actually personally drove the birds to a few towns over to get them there in one day. I'd sure love to call and thank those people for being so kind!

Be sure to write phone numbers on the box communicate with everyone well and you should have good results. Also, watch the weather reports and avoid shipping during heat waves.

All of mine have come with a sliced apple, sometimes sliced in half sometimes in quarters. Pears would work as long as they weren't too ripe but you wouldn't want them unripe either since they're hard as a rock.

The bedding with mine has been either straw or pine shavings.
