Shock collars

I bought a collar over the summer to aid in aversion training to stop my dog from chasing wildlife while off leash. I looked at a ton of collars, and I have to say that the only two brands I would trust on my dog were Sportdog and Dogtra. I ended up going with a Sportdog and I really like it. I don't have to use it often, but I did a LOT of training before using it on my dog. Now it's more of a decorative collar on my dog than anything else, but it gives me a peace of mind that my dog will not run into the road after a deer.

Anyway, the brand you posted above and any of the other cheaper brands tend to run the risk of improper function and actually burning the dog. I've read scary reports of these collars shocking dogs without the owner even pushing the button. That is a really good way to harm a dog.

As a general warning statement to anyone who reads this, shock collars don't solve problems. They are an adjunct to training and should not be a quick fix. They can work well, but used improperly on the wrong dog can spell disaster. I certainly recommend consulting with a trainer before use and reading reading reading before using!

Thanks Chickerdoodle13! That was very helpful. We also have 2 other types of electrification that have worked very well and the dogs are fully trained with the 5 acres of invisible fencing we have and with the electrified poultry netting.

We trained our Irish Setter using a shock collar as a training aid, it is a really nice one with an adjustment for the level of shock on the remote. It was only turned up as high as we needed to get his attention; our setter would get so focused on hunting that he "forgot to listen" when we tried to call him or give him a command. We would give him a tickle to break his focus and he would check on us for orders. lol We got to the point where he got all excited when we pulled the collar out of the closet.
