Just did my day 7 candling, and there's only 1 egg with any development out of 18. 3 with blood rings, the others never started. The air cells are **really** wonky.

They were shipped, and were packed wonderfully from a BYC'er, but the edge of the box was dented, so obviously they had some trauma in shipping.

What do I do? I can have a single chick, can I?

If it were me-I'd leave them in until day 10 just to be sure then toss all clear-blood ringed eggs-My DH thougth we had a big bloodringer-I put a question mark on it and low and behold and chick came 10 days later!!! Give a few more days...

I haven't tossed them yet, I left them in the 'bator.

I'm just wondering if it's possible to have a lone chick?

Unfortunately, our local feed stores are all done with chicks for the year. TSC only gets theirs for that one week.

I guess I could use it as an excuse to get a hatchery order, but I really can't have that many more chickens right now.

Thanks-

How many days 'til the hatch? Could you put some more eggs in the incubator? Then your bird would only be slightly older than its friends, and would only have to be alone for a short while.

Wait . . . I just read that you did your 7 day candling. So, if you could get more eggs, then your bird would only be a week older than it's flock mates. Or maybe more depending on when you could get the eggs. Good luck!

Maybe you can find a fellow BYC'er near you? Look on the thread for your state, or post on the chicks for sale page saying that you need some way of chicken procurement.

I can't wait to order eggs and see just how they are being packed. If the crush on the side of the box injures the eggs then they are not packaged properly. When I worked at the P.O. we used to laugh at the way people would package things. All our efforts to get people to package properly fell on deaf ears. I would love to see posts showing how eggs are being shipped and how they arrive.

The eggs were packaged well. Newspaper, bubble wrap. The fact that the edge of the box had a crush and there were no broken eggs testifies to that. A serious jolt could pretty much "scramble" them, regardless of how they were packed.

These eggs are from a BYC'er with an excellent reputation. They have a good hatch rate on other shipped eggs, so it's a circumstance of my particular shipment. I do not, at all, hold the shipper of the eggs at fault. It's the chance you take with shipped eggs.

I'll have to see if I can get my hands on some more hatching eggs locally.

I know there's a farm on my way home from work who sells brown eggs for eating that are fertile. Maybe I'll pick a dozen up for $2.00 and toss them in the 'bator tomorrow.

Will raising the humidity for the loner's hatch affect the other eggs? I've only got one incubator.

Thanks, everyone.
