Shooting baby predators. Is it wrong?

You did the right thing...could be those babies would have suffered and died anyway without their mama to take care of them. Best to end it quick. I've even killed pups I'd adopted, for the very same reason. When they are already killing chickens at that young of an age, after the usual corrections that have worked on all my other dogs? No way was I going to rehome them to an unsuspecting rural community. Best to get it over with and move on.

You have my sympathy because I know it was hard to kill cute little babies but almost every post has reaffirmed you decision. It wouldn't have been fun to have to cull your birds after the babies got hold of them either. People who don't raise chickens and have not been in that situation cannot possibly understand.

PS thank you for reminding folks that nocturnal animals get insomnia too. I've seen coons, fox, owls, etc in broad daylight looking for free meal.

The only thing I might have done differently is captured the young and waited till they were full grown with nice pelt then dome it.

You did fine dear, would the raccoon have the same guilt if it killed your baby chics?

hey thanks all just wanted to post one final update. I took the dead bodies to a friend who is learning about taxatermy... he's got the basics down but no professional. well, he skinned the 4 young but the mother corpse was too rough to be saved, the meat was also saved but I think it will become more of a crab bait type thing.. it's frozen now. I just posted back to say thanks for relief in saying I did no wrong, and we are getting the maximum use out of the dead raccoons, their deaths will not go to waste. thanks again.

Last winter I found a nest of baby rabbits in our compost heap, couldn't bring myself to harm them. Up to now we have had very little rabbit problem.

Since late Spring we have had a burgeoning population, and I can't help but think I might be responsible.
