My husband had never shot a gun, and it has been over a decade since I last did any shooting. We eventually would like a gun once we are on some land, so took a gun safety class together to ease into it. I almost forgot how much fun shooting can be! There is something very meditative to me too when doing any kind of precision shooting.

Does anyone do any kind of competitive shooting (or precision shooting but purely for fun)? I love biathlons, but found out about a lot of other activities in the class I was not aware of.

I also have always been terrible with a pistol, but we tried shooting pistols with silencers, and myself and another woman suddenly could shoot very well. What gives? It felt like the added weight at the muzzle provided a lot more balance, but I'm not sure if that is the case.

Just noticed this or I would have replied sooner.

In the past I have shot competetively in Trap, Skeet, Sporting clays (shotgun games), 10m air rifle (Qualified for olympic training team but had to decline as my Dad got cancer), 25m Smallbore rifle, and NFAA archery.

I currently compete in an informal trap league, a local action handgun league and CMP service rifle High Power precision rifle shooting at 200 to 600 yards with WWII service rifles. I ranked in the top 100 nationally last year in as-issued vintage rifle.

Precision shooting is a very rewarding sport, whether done for fun or to compete with others. Shooting is a rather easy skill to become proficient with, extraordinarily hard to master. I hope you keep it up and find some local outlets for your newfound hobby. Happy shooting!

You were probably better with a suppressed handgun as there is very little recoil and report. You've probably been anticipating the bang and pulling off target. Also, when a guy's gonna jump through the hoops to add a supressor to a handgun, they typically also do some fine tuning to the action to make a higher quality shooter than a standard handgun.

I shoot practical pistol competitions...mostly IDPA (I'm a 3 division Master), but I also dabble in USPSA occasionally. It's a ton of fun, and most clubs tend to be extremely willing to help new folks get started.

Here's my Youtube channel...I have several videos posted that should give you an idea of what it's like:
