I cut up a small pumpkin, took out the seeds (oops) and fed them the pumpkin. They ate every scrap -- not even a piece of skin left. Next time I will give them the seeds too. Good idea to get cheep pumpkins now. A real plus is that pumplins will keep a long time in a cool spot.
Next pumpkin feeding time I will make time to stay up there and watch them dive in.
I just throw the whole darn pumpkin (sliced in half) in their run and they have fun with it til its gone. I haven't tried the Backyard Poultry recipe yet, - I can't find dandelion greens! - But you can't go wrong with pumpkin, even if you add some garlic and carrots without the greens - you're still doing them good. I believe the pumpkin seed is good for the worming thing, it's the combination of the other ingredients that makes it a panacea for a whole lot of stuff that's going on with your chickens. After all this is stuff we eat, without the sugar and other additives, all good stuff! Chooks are smart ! I keep telling myself that because they have me trained.....

Where do you live that you can't find dandelion greens! I wish we had fewer of them here. They take over the lawn and the garden. They grow everywhere! Their roots can grow straight down a foot or more, and if you don't get it all, they come up tougher and stronger from that little piece of root you didn't get.
Then there are those seed heads that the children love to pick and blow in the wind. I keep telling them they are just helping mother nature plant more WEEDS! My chickens eat them, but they don't love them.
I know! but the people in my neighborhood have to have perfect lawns - which means no dandelion greens that haven't been touched by a chemical of some kind. So I won't forage for those.
I won't take a chance on someone else's property without knowing if they use chemicals either......so I thought I could find them in the grocer......but we don't have them here in the store. so far......but maybe I'll check out the health food store.....only the best for my girls!
My chickens got a pumpkin today as a matter of fact. First one they've had since last autumn. I spent an enjoyable hour watching the silly creatures sneak up on it, snatch as many seeds as they could and then run like heck before the big bad pumpkin could grab them. Of all the things for them to be afraid of.
