should combs be dubbed as chicks?

This can be managed noninvasively, as with a proper coop setup, even in Canada and without heat.

Agreed. If you're dubbing for show, you should wait until the combs, wattles, and earlobes are almost fully developed so that it can be done properly without having to be redone later.

I think the combs and wattles are beautiful - I would never chop them off! It's a pity that shows would require maiming in some birds.

I don't raise games, but I have seen dubbing on well grown cockerels. The only thing that seemed to bother them was being tightly held during the procedure. Once released they acted as if nothing had occurred. There was a little blood, but not very much--no more than a toenail that was nipped a bit too closely. Many, if not most of the breeders find the dubbed birds more attractive. There is a thread about someone trying to breed in the comb genes that would create a naturally dubbed bird.

dubbing is also done to prevent frostbite in colder regions

i would agree it would be best to wait until they are almost fully mature to dub them, as then the comb and wattles are done growing so once they heal they won't grow out more and look bad in the showpen. one thing I have a hard time believing is that they could trim the earlobes on a chick - you got to trim the earlobes too for show.

With game fowl, I believe they must be dubbed for showing purposes. I think in Virginia unless you belong to and can prove that you belong to a game bird organization, it is illegal to dub birds. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong about that.

Dubbing is really not that awful.

The reason that games need to be dubbed for showing is because the standard calls for dubbing. The standard was designed to protect and maintain the "heritage" of the breed.

It is not different than cropping ears, docking tails or removing dewclaws. I take that back. Chickens don't notice anything once the process is over and the healing time is very, very short.

One of the reasons that games need to be dubbed for showing is because of the begining of showing games. Showing games first started to come around when fighting them started to become illegal in the U.S.. At the time most game chickens where already dubbed for fighting. So when they were making the rules they looked at how game chickens already looked. This is basic stuff you can find from most game showing people that are a little older in age. My great grandpa was big in fighting chickens back when it wasnt such a bad thing. I would have never done it personally, but it was just a thing that was common then. After things started to change he got into showing them. This was passed down to my grandpa. Who now shows OEG's. Every one of which is dubbed.
