Should I Adopt a Rooster?

yes, and i think you should start with mine..

i got a rooster for my girls and have never regretted it! i think it will depend on the temperment/ raising of the rooster. just choose very carefully. watch their behavior. look for the one that seems smart, but kind, and of course, beautiful. Good luck!!!

Roosters are AWESOME!

ps. when my rooster came, my hens were already pretty established, like yours. The rooster seemed to take most of his cues from the hens, and settled into their routine, and they all love him now!

Well, I'm vegetarian, so no free dinner here! I'd have to find him a new home, ugh...

Now I am worried that he may lead my girls astray, i.e. into the road. They are SO good about staying in the yard and have never gone near the road but what if he doesn't feel the same constraints?

Such a dilemma!

An old saying- If it works, don't fix it. Hens don't need a rooster. A good rooster is worth his weight in gold, but a bad rooster can wreak all kinds of havoc. If you need to re-home a bad rooster it can be very difficult. Most folks re-home them to the freezer, but with you being vegetarian that option is not really open to you, so you may be stuck with the bad rooster for a good long time. I have always been afraid of getting a bad rooster which is the main reason I have never allowed them in my flock.

I would adopt a rooster, but think carefully about what type of personality you're looking for in a rooster. I myself would go for one you can pick up/is friendly. That might not matter as much to you but it is something to consider. A ratio of 1:10 is what I've heard as far as roosters to hens.

I think I have decided against adopting the rooster. I agree with the above-mentioned saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The girls are so happy and who knows what discordance a rooster may introduce.

I'll wait for one to show up in my yard-now, that's a different story! I always keep those animals.
