I have just been through this decision. My younger beta rooster was my pumpkin pie as I had nursed him through dry pox in my bathroom as a chick then again a few months later when he snagged his leg in some wire loosened after a storm (big boy was happy for me to carry him to food and clean grass for sun bathing). He was sweet and just wanted to care for the hens. Even with around 20 hens (depending how many are broody or raising chicks) it eventually got too much for the flock with over mating.
I recently gave him to a young guy wanting to start a flock but I am sure he will end up in the pot. I was too attached to eat him so I hoped for the best, it did not work out. He had a fine time here and instantly the flock became so much calmer and I am integrating mama's and chicks much more easily. (Even so
I miss him!!)
