W4W, I wish you lived closer. I have about 50 feed bags. Most are blue, some green, a few red. I can't remember what the Nutrena bags look like. I burned a bunch a year ago, and two days later I was told that someone wanted them.
She is too busy to want these ones, so I am finding uses for them. I really don't want to toss them again just in case.
I don't want to make aprons or totes out of them.
Did you know paper bags cost more than twice a plastic bag? And that was before they started making these crappy plastic ones. In 2004 in Pennsylvania, the costs were three cents and seven cents per bag.
4 red Fosters and Gil and Sam the Marans roosters are loaded up and gone. the cage the guy brought would not have been suitable for even 2 more. and it turns out he would take 4 more. so... I'm going to hold them for him for another week. then I keep Fannie and Big Broody. I'll give up the White Rock. I think. maybe he'll settle for 3. it was a bit sad seeing them go. but it's the right thing to do. it started raining, so I think I may hold off on moving Henry and the bantam hens in together until morning. I still have to make a Pie.
awesome chicks W4W and lindz! 4 more days here if those eggs are to hatch...
we don't get the heavy duty plastic bags here anymore, double paper so outside of book covers... they're not that useful
The new bag law here outlaws the thin plastic shopping bags, and stores must charge 10¢ for a paper bag. It doesn't start until Sept, so I have been hoarding what I can. We use them as trash bags. Hate the thought of buying bags just to toss out garbage. We're so spoiled!
I have been very good about leaving those new hatched chicks alone. Luckily Mondays are early days for the boys, so they should be getting home in half an hour or so, and then we will go do a chick check and take some pictures.
I'm having a hatching problem. So far 5 have pipped, and have not made it. Did a partial egg-cropsy on the last one. Fully developed chick. But each egg has a good amount of dark caramel colored liquid at the pip. Are they pipping to early and drowning? These are shipped polish eggs. I keep humidity at 55% till day 19 and I lock down at 65-70%. Always do it this way.
Big Broody Mama lost another egg today, I could tell by the smell - so I made her lift up. the shell was still there, I removed it and only saw 5 other eggs, not sure if there is a 6th or not. 4 days to go and I am discouraged...
the rehomed chickens made the journey just fine. the rest, if he really wants more will go at the end of the week.
21 Eggs and evidence of a broken/eaten brown egg and another wet spot in another nest, the rest laid in there were a bit yolky.
There are at least 5 chicks hatched! 2 yellow, 2 brown, 1 mottled with half black-half white beak. Saw one egg with no pips (different one than the one I accidentally pulled), and there's one unaccounted for. Could have hatched!? but we didn't want to mess with them too much.
Can you see the teeny weeny baby? Soooo cute and tiny! Sister looks tired. Ahhh motherhood! Fudge is right behind her.
One of the browns.
The mottled. Head about as big as my thumbnail.
Here are the 2 week old Eng Orp pics. Much longer legs and a bit of wing now. Otherwise they look about the same as last week.
Compare the new chick with this 2 week hulkster. What a difference! Would take 3-4 thumbnails to cover its head.
The Orps are very friendly and curious. Is hair is as yummy as it looks? Oooooh, googly eyeballs too! (#1son got pecked in the eye!
I got a BR poult out to show DH's aunt. A few minutes later I heard peeping, but thought it was the BBW. They do it when nothing is wrong. Half an hour later, DH's aunt left, and as I was walking back into the house, I heard it again, more frantic. I rushed to the coop, telling them I was coming. I opened the door, and one had flown over the (Cuckoo's Nest) wall. Tomorrow the fencing goes up, and I will have to cover the cross beams in the rafters too. There are nails protruding from the roof. If they fly against them...
