Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Current egg. Multi colored and lumpy.

I think it's fairly normal for the quality of the egg to decrease a bit through the laying season. Full time laying takes a toll on them. From what I've heard, the spots are just a hiccup in the last spray paint layer. Is she starting to molt? My blue/green layers and Welsummer all had brighter, darker eggs in the spring and all got pale and lighter as the summer progressed. Sometimes those odd eggs don't have a proper coating of bloom on them, so you may want to pop it in the 'frige.

I gave the girls some kale for the first time today. I think they like it. Yay!! I got my second egg of the day. It was from Smoke. The texture and color of her eggs seems to be changing as she get older. They are not as smooth and have gone from a lovely mauve/brown color to a lighter multi colored egg. The shape is the same.
Chickens will often be hesitant with a new food. They will be more excited about kale next time. Kale is one of the best things you can give them!

Smokes egg from January is on the far left. Smooth... narrow
Nice!

I just started to give BOSS again. Some of the girls are in a light molt. The egg in question is from my 3 year old BSL.

She is the oldest and the lead hen. I figured that she is getting older and that is why her eggs are changing a bit. Really good to see you on her Ronott1.

Well I thought I was ready to start putting eggs in my homemade incubator.......but I'm not lol. I made one but didn't have a thermostat or a fan and the temps were 110! So I'm waiting on a delivery hopefully by Friday and get those eggs going. So excited and nervous :-\

I've read good things about sand. It looks better, its cleaner, easier to clean, keeps the smell down and drains well. I am going to switch to sand in the Spring. There is too much going on right now. Also... I think I will need a lot of sand. The run is 10x20.

One ton did me. Call around to find the kind of sand you want (river is best). It shouldn't be expensive. I paid twenty or thirty.

DH came through last night. Fortunately, I was already planning to make a real meal for supper (instead of PB&J). It was kinda nice seeing him, but boy did he make a mess!! How can a man make such a mess in 12 hours?!?! We took a ride, and I was wearing a tank top with a hoodie over it. He was wearing his leathers and gloves. Five minutes in, I was freezing. At 100+ MPH he couldn't hear me saying I needed to stop, and since he was all snuggly warm (and male, thus self centered) he didn't think to ask if I was okay. That ride has reminded me of an important fact. If you have cowhide, WEAR IT!
