Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

W4W, I do use some bag balm on the dry tips of comb points, or lower ridge of wattles, but only a smear, too much seems to backfire. I've tripled my efforts to block any possible drafts and snow still filters in... insidious stuff!! the flock has always been fine at 30-35 below, so I wasn't overly worried about 5 more (less??) degrees, and they were just dandy this morning. even the boys section. all were alive and well, and hanging close together to preserve heat. more corn in today's feed than usual, simply to help them stay warm. I was gone for 11 hours, so breakfast was it for me. it was pitch black out at 7 when I finally got home. so much for feeling better too... I'm whooped and seem to have bronchitis. bummer. 35 days til my schedule eases up. then it will be Spring. but I do have Monday off and if Gossy's chicks hatch on time, it will be a most fun day of playing with fuzzy butts!!

So 40 below isn't that different from the last few years. I knew you were in the COLD, just wasn't sure how cold. Bag balm is good stuff. We used to use it on the horses, and it made your hands so soft. Who told you to use the balm?! (Seinfeld reference

Any fans out there?) Have you been to the doc about the bronchitis? Don't want it to get any worse, so take care.

mortie, hope your evening with Mr. Brown went well. You feeling any better?

Hi guys! It was my turn to be sick here in our house and it looks like I had company here on the thread. I still have a cough that won't go away. The girls are really picking up and there are several more newlayers! I am pretty sure the two blue Cochin girls started laying the past couple of days. I need to figure out what to do with all these extra eggs

My meeting with Mr Brown did go well. It was very exciting.

We're back in the deep freeze now and yesterday no one went out to collect eggs right away. I wen out at about one to fill the water and food and found that they picked the below zero day when no one was gathering eggs to ha ha another perfect 6 egg day. I picked each egg up and found no cracks but when I put them in my coat pocket the slight temp change sent one over the edge and it popped like when you drop a light bulb. When I got in I examined it and sure enough one had a big crack. Funny.

The forecast shows about 10 in the deep freeze. Temps below zero pretty consistently. Ugh.

i guess my chickens are not like me, they must like it cold been laying good got 29 eggs all last week, came home last night and there were 28, good girls i am still waiting for 43 eggs but not sure what i would do with getting that many in one day, went to a funeral yesterday and the family asked if i brought eggs with me, told them one day i would bring some up to them, dh said we should but i told him no it was to cold and they would freeze.

rotten little stinker. Tommy's finally gotten some spurs under all those feathers. they're pretty small, and not sharp, but really really curly, like the hook on a hanger. he's hooked on my sleeve, all because I wanted to shoo him over on the roost so I could put some bag balm on Max. I love that stuff, good for so many critters...
W4W, I forgot to tell you about how to get the dogs outside in the frigid temps. Chester doesn't mind one bit, but he won't stay out as long as he ordinarily would... Ruby has to be carried out and watched or she'll act like she did her business to try to get back inside, then go poop and pee on the floor towels in the bathroom (if I'm lucky, if I'm not, she will go upstairs and poop and pee on my pile of laundry

I try to make sure everything makes it into a basket...)

on the Gossy front, she's so spoiled... but I do hear faint noises coming from underneath. not a lot, and not frequent, but I'll be checking often to see if/when it increases... she ate well this morning and then geesed a big wet, noisy mess right on the nest. I had to pull her out to get at it, she was squawking ferociously, omg that pile was so stinky!!

well today I got two eggs and one membrain ,no egg in side.and no shell mmmmm

I love those!

If I catch them soon enough and there is a yolk, I make scrambled eggs with them.

As long as they are getting enough calcium, the hen that laid it will be fine.
