Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

She's gorgeous. I have a chicken that is a little bit grabby when I have treats. Interestingly, she is pretty much the hen on the totem pole...this is she....Maggie

These were the best I could get. She hates the camera.

Pretty girl. Her comb still looks a little pale, so think you have a longer wait for those green eggs. My EE was later starting than some of the others. The bright side is that she is still laying regularly in her 4th season. The 6-7 eggs per wk hens have mostly succumbed to health problems, except for my production New Hamp. She's been pretty steady.

Indeed, I believe my very prolific layers will peter out pretty soon. They are heading into their second winter now. My Ameracauna are heritage birds so they lay fewer eggs but I expect them to go longer.

So, I have another easter egger who is about 26 weeks. Her comb is still pink and very small. Do you think she'll just be a late bloomer, or is there a possibility she'll never lay?

I just went to check on the chickens. They look like they walked through a wall made of dirt. It looks to me like they had a nice dust bath. One of the girls ruffled her feathers to get the dirt off. Of course, with my luck, the wind had to blow towards me. So far today they have pooped on my (new) shoes, tried to eat my finger, and got me covered in dirt. Now I see why some people don't have chickens.

My EE is one of the larger birds in the coop, so I figured she needed more time to get to mature weight. Can't remember when she started, but it was close to 30 wks. It's hard when you hear stories of 20 or even 18 wks for them to start, but that's not the norm. Who wouldn't want to brag, though. I would!

Oh, yes they are dirty. Just wait til it rains! And noisy. The hens can be very loud, especially right after laying.
