Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Cheeka, idk bout you but I'll take 48 and rain over this -something and single digits any day! Here in Pa, we're getting about the same temps as you. And my crappy insulated (read not insulated at all!) house is still only 62° WITH the heat cranked to 78°!! Gave a passing thought and almost crawled into the coop with the girls but it's still just slightly warmer in the house. Just.

Ditto! It's unreal how cold my house is!

I really want to go to bed, but someone keeps poking me on FB, and it is beginning to hurt!

Can't sleep from the pain!
The chicks are getting freaked by me. I changed their water, and put it back. The sound of 18 screaming chicks is deafening!! And the funny part was that they were running around and through the water while screaming!
This evening I went to watch them, and they all ran to the far corner to hide.

They don't like me!

Can someone please remind me how much they eat? I am going for feed in a few days, and I can't remember how long it will take to go through fifty pounds their first month.

Not sure how much they eat. My feed store breaks down 50lb bags into 5 or 10 lb bags of various feeds, so I go with that. Little more expensive, but Serama don't eat that much! Locking up tonight, I saw one more egg with a pip!

And when I checked the 4 eggs the cochin is setting, no pips, but Bunny was talking to the eggs big time. Haven't heard her do that before, so figure she has heard them. We'll see what tomorrow brings!

Meanwhile, the other 5 are doing great. They go under their heating pad brooder and seem pretty happy.
The little one on the right is the smallest chick I've seen yet. The 2 in the food dish are the biggest of this bunch, and the other 2 are quite small by comparison, but not as tiny as little yellow.

Not sure how many chicks you have but I had 8 (9 for the first 6 days but one died

) and I believe mine went through a bag just shy of 8 weeks. And that was even with a lot of wasted and spilled feed and dumping out the feeder at first when it got poo in it. First time owner mistakes lol then i switched to non medicated around 7 weeks. So yeah, it lasted me quite a while :) now they're complaining about the layer pellets lol i may switch back to starter/grower or all flock until they lay or indefinitely. Only 16 weeks as of today and I have BR, BO, BA, and EE, and was just following what the bag said but honestly they probably won't even lay until at least 20 or 24 weeks. So may as well switch back. Although they also get too many treats

I had a pipe burst yesterday - a trouble pipe... had it repaired a few times, but it's lasted 9+ years, so I couldn't remember which of the many many many valves on the many many many pipes running along the basement ceiling actually turned off that section. I thought I had it, then nope, then yes, then no... so I turned off the water main. because of that, I had to shut off the furnace, can't have that running without water... anyway, it took about 3 hours and handyman and I had it fixed. I am so grateful he was around. while I waited for him to arrive, I zipped to the hardware store and got the flex pipe, the shark bite coupler's and pipe cutter as well as the flex pipe remover tool, just in case... I still have stuff to put back, but it's all dry and cleaned up.
my house may have a few old drafty windows, but it is very well insulated. during the 3.5 hours that the furnace was off, the house only dropped from 68 to 60. upstairs was still probably 65.

it's weirdly warm this morning. not raining yet, but we did get a bit of slush overnight.

MC, that many chicks will go through 50 lbs in ~ 3-4 weeks. has shelf life of 3 months, so... you're good with one 50 lb bag at a time since you stocked up on all those big bags not long ago, unless you have room, and can store an extra...

I have a bruise on the left side of my left leg. I don't know how I got it, but it didn't really bother me since I'm always into something. Duckling just pointed out bruising that looks like fingers on the back of my right leg. Now I'm kinda worried.

I think it comes from having chickens...and kids...

I found a bruise on my left arm a couple of days ago and do not know how I did it!

The benefits of time off... getting stuff fixed right away! Can I come stay at your house? It's much warmer than mine! Was 78° here yesterday, so I opened up the house and it was a lovely 74° inside. This morning, 61° which is couple degrees higher than usual. The only time the thermostat is set above 65 is when we have company!

Chicks are doing fine this am. Haven't checked for new chicks in the bantam coop yet.
