Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Please help settle a dispute. Roger thinks that "Mealworms" means you make a meal out of them. I suggest they are treats. I knew this would happen when she got introduced to "Mealworms". I see a egg strike in the near future.

yeah... I'll tell my boss that I need a few days off so I can do that, think she'll let me go? I couldn't even get a day off when my (former) MIL died in January. the dome was a stroke of genius born out of desperation to save my remaining chickens from the fox. it's amazing what I can come up with when the pressure is on! look for an old tarp carport, or at least the pipes from an old carport... cuz that's all mine is made from. my mechanic will bend more pipes for me anytime I need them... his daughter really loves my eggs...

And I had a nice Eagle looking chick that I was going to name America or Freedom. Turns out it was a RIR roo. Looking at pics of him now, I see his comb and wonder how I didn't know.

Skip down to the blue for the short answer!

I have been reading about worms so much my head's spinning. Here's my take on the info- If your chickens walk on the ground, they have worms, which most can live with just fine, unless the worm load becomes too large. If you see worms in the poop, it is very late in the game and the birds' health is seriously at risk as worms do a great deal of internal damage. This also opens a compromised bird to secondary infections and diseases. There are different types of worms and not all worming medication will work for all types, most are off label wormers for larger livestock. Some vets or universities can check a stool sample for oocysts (worm eggs) from which they identify the type. Most vets are not familiar with chickens specifically, but can still do this float test. Oocysts are not visible without magnification except for tape worms, which package their eggs in those lovely little squirmy rice-like segments.

The closer chickens live to a 'natural' state, the more likely they are able to build resistance to and tolerance for worms. Wild birds without some natural tolerance do not survive. Since mine are cooped and restricted to a particular area, they are more susceptible to worm overload. Climate and soil conditions play a role. Warm, moist soil is a more hospitable environment for worms. Wild birds spread the joy of worms to all, as do other carriers in the worm life cycle such as flies, beetles, and yummy earthworms (say it isn't so!). So it doesn't surprise me that my girls had trouble in our mild wet winter and when I encouraged them to gorge themselves on earthworms.

Natural preventatives (pumpkin seeds, pepper flakes, ACV, etc) can help prevent infestation and encourage optimal health, but do not work to eliminate worms once they have taken hold. DE spread in the environment can reduce worm populations there, but feeding DE will not rid a bird of worms. I could not find any studies on the efficacy of pie.

Finally, the answer to your question:
As much as I don't like to, I'm going to medicate. Using 1% injectable ivermectin for cattle because I already have it, and it is used for dogs and people too. (If I ever buy it again, it will be pour on). Lots of controversy about whether worms have built a resistance to ivermectin due to it's frequent use against mites, but local folks have had success with it. No matter what you choose, they will need to be redosed at 10 days to kill newly hatching worms. It is advised to avoid eating eggs for 2 weeks after any medication, although withdrawl times vary. My dogs will get ivermectin eggs. Ivermectin is ineffective against tapeworms. If your pigs are thin they probably need worming too. Just make sure you check the timing before slaughtering, if that is their fate.

Anyone worming chickens regularly should rotate medications to keep the worms from developing resistance. Wazine is the only one approved for use in chickens. Valbazen is the only one that will kill all worm types, including the creepy tapeworms, and there are others commonly used (but I'm too lazy to look them up now). As a rule, most parasites are host specific, so the worms your chickens might get will be different from pig worms (different species of tape worms). You can't give chickens your head lice (for example, I'm not making assumptions!!) and while bird lice might crawl on you, you will not be a host for them. Of course there are some horrible exceptions to this general rule (think ticks), so I try to use caution.

Sorry for the lengthy reply. I'm sure you didn't intend to open up a whole can of worms with your question. Get it? Can of worms!

Was talking to my dad about this and he thinks I'm crazy, I shouldn't have to worm my flock because in 20 years
old.gif
they never had to worm the barnyard chickens. Well, he forgot the the horses were wormed regularly, and where did the chickens spend a large portion of their day? Scratchin' in the horse poo, so they got wormed by default! He told me a gross-out story that he had read---- overweight people will intentionally ingest a tapeworm because it causes rapid weight loss. Apparently you can purchase them for this reason? Crazy? I think so.

If I can't convince my kids that ice cream is not a meal, I probably won't be much help. Maybe start calling them mealy-worms? Nah, she won't fall for that. Afraid you have opened up a can of worms here, OK! (get it?

) Seems you are doomed to spend an outrageous percentage of your income on treats for Roger. Oh wait, are you still raising them in the closet? That's the way to go! Never mind, go buy yourself a new car or something.

Maybe include one of your little blue-eyed cutie-patoot.

that's what I thought a cattle panel was too, could be covered with hardware cloth and make a nice frame... DH must be happy that you are not moving them into the house...

so last night, after all was quiet, I took the pup out for a pee and it was SNOWING!!! just lightly, but it freaked me out for the chicks sake. I grabbed the flashlight and dashed to the backyard. they were all roosting and were completely fine. I woke up Archie, who started crowing. which set up a chain reaction... and before I got halfway back to the house, all 3 boys were harmonizing, accented by the tiny wee crow of a very young cockerel. it was just so dear... I'm sure the neighbors didn't feel the same way, but it was only 9:45... and they stopped pretty quickly. I got up super early to check on them and see how much snow...just a dusting, and they are fine. the main roost broke... but it was getting a bit brittle... I didn't think it would last long, but I didn't expect it to break right away... that must have been a nasty shock to the chicks... dumped, unceremoniously onto the ground in the middle of a good deep sleep... I will pick up a handrail at the lumberyard on my way home from work. it's pretty cold this morning, but the run is fairly toasty and quite cozy... I'm so relieved!

W4W, the cockerel is dark brown and red. omg, looking at this pic again, look at that comb! I didn't notice it back then at all... what a knucklehead... I can't find him in the crowd shots either, but, they were piled in the feed bowl...

If it was a snake it would have bit you! In your defense, you have been incredibly busy and don't get many well lit daylight hours at home. He's sticking it right out there for the camera, too!

Another RuPaul (boy in girl disguise!).

oh yeah, I knew there was one more thing I wanted to say... the white chick... what a ham! she's in just about every picture, right up at the front of the line for anything to eat... very sweet once you catch her, but she's pretty quick to hop out of the way... she will be one of my fav's... I'm sure of that!
love.gif
Have you named her?

It's part of the rooster survival strategy. Blend in and hide amongst the girls until either you know you are your human's favorite or you receive a name. Rocky's got it made!

When you guys get your coops done, I would love to see what you did. I'm still trying to figure out a good plan for the Serama coop and would love to see new ideas. We used tree branches for roosts too. Told you I'm cheap frugal.

I spent a few hours getting the frame ready to start the actual building. The temp was 23, with a -7 windchill. I was wearing 2 hoodies (one warm, one ratty that I could cut up with the remaining wire and nails) but stripped down to my jeans and tank. My bottom was cold yesterday. Today it is ... Somewhere else. And it hurts!
I put the floor down on the blocks, and checked for nails. The frame is lined up. I am probably going out in a while to put something down on the floor to make it more poop proof. I am stuck here without a way to get to a store, and roofing paper is all I have, so it is what I will use. I will then lay the frame down, and fasten it. It is so much lighter without the doors, rabbit boxes, and roof!
I do wish I had a helper to help with the heavy stuff, but I cannot wait until Monday (when DH comes home) to get stuff done. This is taking longer than I had planned as it is!
Can I paint the coop (outside walls) while the flock is in the run? I mean, will the fumes linger into the night? I guess I should look that up. Answer anyway if you know, please.
How sad is it that I am too tired to make PB&J?

I sure do know how it feels to be too tired to make a PB&J... I will usually eat fruit, as that needs no prep, but I have been known to put a spoon of both PB and J in a bowl, and mix it up... eat it off the spoon. but it sounds like you are making good progress. I was in the same boat, building most of that dome by myself. there were portions that just could not be done with only one set of hands... so some things had to wait til my friends could be around... the rest I managed, sometimes gouging my hands on the wire. lots of battle wounds.

as far as my little RuPaul, I think I was just in denial... hoping for all girls... but I am not surprised. one died, one boy... out of 15, that's way better than average when playing the hatchery game.

I got tons of stuff done today after work. got feed and cracked corn, and grit, the chicks need better grit in their crops to work at the cracked corn. I got 4 bales of straw, placed them at the 2 exposed corners to block drafts, collected 8 eggs
hmm.png
from 6 hens... they are laying in lots of new spots all of a sudden.... must be going to have a RIR broody... those are the extra eggs... and broke Blu's egg in my pocket. it wasn't as messy as I thought it would be. it stayed pretty well contained in the shell, and the jacket is nylon, so it wiped right out with a paper towel. it's supposed to get really cold over the next 2 days, Sunday night in the single digits, so it is imperative that I make sure the chicks are safe and warm enough or I will have to bring them back in. So far, they are doing great. they don't seem to mind the cold, they are not huddled up... it was their first taste of corn, and they were true to their breed and devoured half of it in no time. they had drank (drunk?) half of the water I brought to them this morning. everyone got a refill on the waterers and a big pile of corn to help build up internal heat. I have a can of tuna that I will sacrifice for animal protein as well to help maintain heat.

I did find a roost pole at the lumber yard. I found a fat rail that was 11' long that had a twist. so he sold it to me for the same price as a 7' closet rod and the promise of a dozen eggs on Tuesday. He was happy to be able to get anything for it, the eggs I offered because he's always so nice to me. we both made out... I'll have him hooked on my eggs in no time
wink.png
so the chicks have 2 nice roosts, one 8' spanning the width, and one 3', on a diagonal in the corner. the other roost runs the length, and it's a nice tree branch. so was the one that broke, it was from last year, just old and too dry. I did stroll the woods looking for branches that I could cut, and I did find a few nice ones... and yeah, OK, I do drill a hole in each end and wire tie them to the frame. that's how it is in the dome, and they almost look suspended, can't really see how they are attached til you get a good close look. I like that.

ahhhh, so... I don't have Monday off after all. my PM told me yesterday that she hadn't heard anything about the 18th, so I had the day off. today, there was an email taped to my desk stating that I am on. as the Primary. that means a full day. AND the email was dated Thurs 2/14. so I am very annoyed at my PM. I'm doing the double routes every day for the rest of the week and was so looking forward to having 2 whole days off in a row (like a mini vacation!) and now... oh well...

We all have long days, I guess (okay, I know).
On the up side, the neighbor left me alone. AND!!! I remembered I could use feed bags for the bottom of the coop. I have plenty! I think so anyway. 4X8, and I think I have 10 bags. The coop doesn't look that big, but I think the 12X12 looks small. I also found some chicken wire. Not a lot, but enough that I can put something together to let them outside. I may just wait until I have enough for a real run. I am planning 8X 20. Who knows? It will be whatever looks good. The Marans will have a roof. I am not taking chances with expensive birds!
11 eggs today.
