Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

is this a hen? or pullet? is she a known layer? it's early in the season for broodiness to start... just remove her from the nest a few times a day to start. if she's firmly determined, she will return consistently... so, during the day, when everyone else is wherever they are... free ranging, in a pen... she need to be where they are. if she wants to sleep in the nest, you should remove her at dusk, and put her on the roost. blocking nests is a pain, because it blocks other birds out too... and you have to get up really early to open it for others. that's why people tend to pen the broody bird... never "lock" her out of her safety zones.

yes, she a hen, first time going broody. It's summer here. ill take her and the fake eggs out now. I would LOVE!!!!!!!! to get some fertile eggs!!! I have 1 or 2 frizzles coming in soon and my coop and run isn't big enough for more

I took my broody hen and she just ran around with the others. ill go down every now and then and take her off. her being broody explains a lot. There were black feathers (the broody hen is black) were all over the coop and she has been in there for most of the last 3 days. thank u for the help very much appreciated

Very true!

You all will either be proud of me... or call me crazy!

I had a friend ask me about splitting an order of chicks from Ideal hatchery..... I said NO! I really didn't want to have to set up a brooder ect....

haha yes I understand that. you could always buy them when hatched or wait for a broody hen. ps Day-sha-voo (I cant spell, sorry)

What's the earliest anyone has had a chick lay? I'm at 14 weeks and I can't wait... Even tho I know I have a ways to go!!!

my December chicks all started between 17.5 and 19 weeks. I thought my older birds were hiding eggs, it didn't occur to me that the younger could be laying yet as it was a full two month longer wait the previous year... .then I found 3 blue eggs in one day. and I only had 1 blue egg layer... I was stunned!

I won't expect that in the future, the later additions all went beyond 6 months before the first egg... and I'm still waiting on 1 Cochin and of course, Silkie... but Cochin Zira's comb is finally turning kind of orange-pink. should be this month hopeuflly...

I was still under the weather and fell asleep before 9 last night. started to wake up at 4, but lounged and listened for rooster calls. I could hear the bantam group from up the street, but nothing from my boys until about 6:30, just before it got light, it was only Royce, and he only crowed about 4 times through sunrise. as soon as the sun was turning the sky pretty colors, they all joined the chorus. it was nice.

6 more weeks of winter. I'm not surprised, we never get an early spring up here.... and I don't trust that rodent anyway.

Wheeeee!!!! I got a blue egg this morning!

I was getting worried because after breakfast we were down to one egg.

Rumples pulled through with an average sized egg. 58 grams. Her first was 44 grams. It is a lighter shade of blue than her first real egg, but I am Happy... Happy... Happy!!
