Good Morning Everyone!!!

so much to tell y'all! yesterday was so busy, sorry i didn't get online to report my 4 fabulous eggs... it was a perfect and gorgeous day, 45 degrees, no wind... work was a breeze, and my tractor parts were in! so the JD is fixed and ready to move some serious snow the next time it flies! I had my car inspected a couple of days ago, and he discovered that a wheel bearing was going bad... so I had an appt for next Wed, but he called and fit me in yesterday, which was so great as my schedule is still crazy and I will put a thousand miles on my car next week... (no exaggeration!)

I borrowed another large crate and split the chicks into two groups of 7, lots more room now. spent hours cleaning the house, (the washer is sparkling, so laundry got done... and yeah, I know about methane gas...) now, here's where I've gone a little nuts... Peach really hates constant confinement... so, I've been letting her out to hang in the room... so far, I have only had to pick up 2 poops. she seems to spend most of her day roosting on top of her crate or the chicks crate(s), looking out the window, so the poop falls through the bars, and lands in her bedding... (haven't noticed any poop on the chicks, lol) I put her back in and close the door at night.

This morning, when I let the dog out, Peach also wanted to go out... so I let her. she hung nearby the door pecking at the little bit of grass showing where the snow melted... I figured that when the dog was ready to come back in, I would just step out and scoop her up... well... I didn't have to. she came back inside right behind the dog! I just love that silly little bird! she is so unique...!

one of the chicks has some neurological or other fairly serious defect. I've noticed odd head twisting behavior since she was a few days old. she can rotate her neck like nothing I've ever seen before, and she has balance issues, she does roost, but with difficulty. this morning, she was roosting on the front piece of cardboard by the door (to keep bedding from being kicked all over the floor) and she was very damp... like she fell into the water dish. I don't think she is blind, although she doesn't seem to use her left eye to look at things. her pupil looks normal anyway. I will have to get some pictures of her contorting... she's a very pretty brown/red and super sweet... I'm sure many folks would cull her or simply kill her for her disability, but I won't. me and my special needs cases... she manages fine and is perhaps a little bigger than most of the other chicks, and I will of course, keep an eye on her when the two groups merge in another month and a half. she's been renamed "Cockeyed Carol" by my friends... and just in case her vision is not strong, I did not move her to the new crate. she knows where everything is in the original... and if she's still falling in the water, I don't want to stress her more by making changes... although the second crate is set up exactly like the first... food and water in the same spots, and same for the roosts... I know... I'll get pics!

so this is getting "rambly" but one more thing... had another date last night. perfect ending to a perfect day! it was wonderful. as tired as I was when I got home a little before midnight... I was charged up with positive energy and didn't fall asleep until about quarter to two! can't wipe the silly grin off my face!

I am so glad you had such an awesome day yesterday! Peach sounds like the perfect chicken. You got lucky. It sounds tempting to keep her in the house. Not a good idea, but tempting. She doesn't make much of a mess, and follows the dog.

So far today, I am tired as heck thanks to a late night, and the strong winds waking the dog, thus me.
I had a rabbit hutch (8X2) on its end. The thing weighs a stinkin' ton. The wind knocked it over. The garage door had flown open, and was banging in the wind as was the run door. The girls didn't want to come out to eat, so I put their food inside. I brought fresh water, and the thing was almost empty by the time I got to the coop (the wind was splashing it out). And THEN!!!! When Red was being transferred to the other crate yesterday, we took the top off the dog carrier to get him easier. I never did put the crate back together, and inside. I looked down to see the cage door. I found the top in the next yard, and still can't find the bottom. If I don't find it, I will buy a bigger one to replace it. Maybe even a wire cage. I am not using it for transporting the dog anyway. May as well save $$ (you know the plastic carriers cost more), and have more room for chickens!

One egg so far. Hoping for a dozen, but seriously doubt it.
Anyone else in this part of the crazy world feel a moment of panic when you saw that the temp is getting down to zero, with a -40 windchill? I finally remembered that the windchill doesn't count as long as the coop is draft free. I think it is. The door is not tight (yes, that is bad. I know). But if they are cold, the other side of the coop is 100% draft free, and has a thick bedding of pine.

wow MC! more than blustery winds down your way already! it's 44 degrees here, very windy too, but only about 25 mph and the snow is swirling despite the warmth... with the wind chill, it's about 35... but yes, it will be in the zero's and below starting tomorrow, which was the determining factor for keeping the chicks inside a little longer, rather than trying to move them to the portable run and worrying about them... it is VERY tempting to keep Peach as a house chicken... even tho' I know it is not best for her... so I will enjoy this time that she needs to heal, and as soon as the aprons arrive, I will move her back out... her happiness and normal life is more important than my quirks about "pets"... I did get so lucky with her... she's a gem, and her eggs are so perfect and yummy... I never sell or give them away, I tell folks it's because they are small... but really it's because of my attachment to her, and want to keep them all for myself! I'm rarely selfish about anything, truly...
there is just something about Peach that I can't deny.

The wind keeps me up at night too. Too many surprises can sneak up on you when it's really windy, and I get jumpy. Not to mention the cold-ear headaches you get. Or is that just me, wimpy west coaster?

Cheeka, I've heard of wry neck and Star Gazer disease as things that can cause a twisted neck and coordination problems. Don't know much at all about wry neck. Lady I got my Ameraucanas from told me about Star Gazer, as one of her other chicks had it. It's curable. Instead of me trying to explain, I copied this from a post about the problem. I am unsure about choosing the vitamins with iron added, though. Need to read back through my pms to see what the breeder used. Her chick recovered.

Quote:
Star Gazer hens are affected by a Thiamine and B1 deficiency I used Poly-Vi-Sol a childs vitamin sold in most drug stores and walmart. get the one with Iron and Vitamin E they need a few drops of the vitamin, and about 100mg of the vitamin E it is almost impossible to tell how much they are getting so I stabbed a hole in the liquid cap of the vitamin and squeezed some in the birds mouth. I bought insulin syringes and took the needles off It takes a little while but they can recover. I kept mine isolated I have a place in the basement I use for an infirmary. Just to give her some quiet recovery time. I caught it right away and so I think mine will recover completely.

Good luck with your bird and I don't blame you for not culling I won't either!!

Back when I find out more!

Found it! Still not clear about the iron in the baby vitamins. Most things I have read say to avoid the iron.

This is part of an email from a breeder here in NorCal. She had just hatched out some chicks, and one could not eat due to the Star Gazers. I have heard it can happen to older chicks and hens as well.

Quoted from Chickee:
I had a pretty good hatch but with some problems. One of the 3 bantam d'Anver chicks hatched with a Thiamine deficiency (comes from the hen having a Thiamine deficiency) and was what they call a "Star Gazer" which starts with them looking upwards and then the neck twists backwards and they can't stand. I tried all sorts of things and was going to put it out of its misery when suddenly it started to get better and now it is normal!!! It took a lot of research and diligence but it paid off
yesss.gif
I gave it baby Polyvisol vitamins, B12 liquid drops and force fed it cooked egg yoke and water for two days before it started to come out of it. I am really attached to this little guy now!

This might not be what's wrong with your chick, but extra B12 and some vitamins certainly can't hurt.
End of unsolicited advice.

for date #2!

Well, heck. Only 8. Ha ha. You know I am happy with 8.
The neighbor found the carrier bottom in the woods at the bottom of the property. I finally cleaned out the mess the mice made under the kitchen sink (spanning 3 cabinets). Really gross. Now I just have to get the drawer under the stove. That will take about 15 minutes to clean, but a lot longer to wash the pans. Since they are going into storage anyway, I doubt I will bother.
