Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hey guys! I've been busy, I have 4-H wildlife state competition coming up Thursday, we are leaving Wednesday and staying the night up there, so I've been studying for it.

Random question. All roosters crow, right??? Have a SLW who sex has been questioned twice now. I bought her as a hen. Never heard a crow. But I've had two people say either rooster or wasn't sure.

Other than the huge waddles, no sickle or saddle feathers, ad no crowing. But I haven't caught her laying an egg, either. I get a large cream colored egg each day that's either hers or the same aged RIR.

How old is she? Pretty sure that's a pullet. The males have a lot more white on the wings, and mostly white neck and saddle area when those male feathers come in. Do a search and look through the images. She doesn't look like the roos at all.

I agree about the bachelor pen, and was going to suggest it too. I have yet to make mine, but I am looking into it for this summer.
Sally, W4W makes a lot of sense about the health problems and about broken necks due to freaking out. Medicating blindly is not good. Did you mean you had the chicks vaccinated against Coccidiosis (or however the word is spelled!

)?
If ANYONE has chicks that were vaccinated for Cocci..., be sure to not give them medicated feed. The double dosing is dangerous to chicks.

Anyone see AL lately? She should be out of school by now. I hope she is feeling okay.
I definitely have an egg problem. I found another broken/soft shell tonight. I will have to put the oyster dispenser back up. They kept knocking it down, and I finally kept it down.
The BCM chicks (5 weeks) are so much smaller than the 9 and 13-week-olds. They needed out of the brooder, and all the other chicks were being moved and combined. I didn't know what else to do. They mostly seem mad at me. That or they are just very curious. They are the only non-hatchery chicks in there. Wonder if they know I am not their mommy, and want in the coop with her(s)?

Soon. I don't see a comb on any of them, so they can go in the Marans coop in 2-3 months.
I have managed to get 11 pullets out of 14 straight run this year so far! Woo hoo!

I bought mine as insurance... ya know, if you have you may never need it... But with so many birds, I am worried if we get a run of it, I could lose a lot. I have a binder in my first aid kit with info on the "bad stuff" like cocci. I clean my coops more than my house

and probably wash their dishes more often too! That's great news on the pullets! I run into the problem of not enough males usually. I need more australorp boys.

She's suppose to be about a year old. That's why I figured at some point if she really was a roo, she would have crowed. I bought her, and two others, from a kid in town.

I was thinking... Sally, about the sitters as well... but mostly as to whether or not they too are chicken keepers. Sometimes, just walking into someone's pens with your dirty shoes on can spread disease... and your sitters might not realize...

Violet is still determined to sit, so I asked around locally and couldn't find hatching eggs... so I ordered some from eBay. 6 GLW/SLW. I have a friend who wants chickens... so he can have these (if they hatch) once they've been raised up a bit.

only 10 eggs yesterday, and more rain. it is not supposed to stop before Saturday. I'm sure glad the boys roof is up and working great!

19.5 weeks and the crew is on coop lock-in schedule until 9:30-10:00. Kids let them out and start egg patrol and coop clean-up. I leave for work before 8, so the kids will either be the first to find a coop egg or I am going to start sending the bigger kids into the woods where the crew tends to loaf in between foraging. To top it off, just had to buy 5 doz eggs from the store b/c my chicken buddy is down to 4 layers (from 20)...sigh
