Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Quote: Ooops. Sorry, I got the wrong bird. I have an Australorp too and I think she is the prettiest by far. (Shhhh

Don't let the others hear.) Jet black feathers with a beetle green sheen in the sun and her eyes so big and dark - simply beautiful. She's a hatchery girl too.

I've seen pictures of rhodebars that folks have on my local thread, but more often I see Cream Legbars with the little crests. I like the way they both look, especially with the barred look, blue eggs are a bonus, but autosexing is the best (although I really do feel bad for the boys sometimes

). You will have some great layers!

ugh... I have to try to get some sleep... I want to get up early, not just in case Violet returns, but to see if Peachy has any chicks and if I need to get her big chicks outta there... I think they will be all right... but to be sure... I need to be out there super early.
I feel for you. Hope you get some rest. I didn't realize Peach was so close to hatch time.

she didn't come back. I've searched... it's dark. if she had the capacity to come back she would have by now... my other RIR Rose knows she missing. everyone else was roosting, she was still standing by the door. I'm so very sad. it was so bright and sunny... makes no sense. Chester was out on his line most of the day... woofing... you'd think that would be enough to keep the fox or whatever away....

it really sux. I am so sorry, this year has been painful for many of us.

Quote: Now that's not fair! We all know that Red is not a regular chicken. He is Rooster the Red, stuff of legend and poetry! (If I can find that poem I will repost to prove it!)

Haha! He did meet his match! I have a royal Palm pair now, and Tom does NOT leave hen alone for a second! He is well mannered but both are still not sure about me. One of our members had sold their eggs to me a few months back and I had an excellent hatch. She decided to go a different direction, and offered up the pair, i JUMPED on it and glad I did!

Not named yet. She is so sweet! rarely misses a day laying.

I'm posting just so I can "subscribe" to this thread. It always has me laughing and I don't want to loose it. I'm in the waiting period with my 21 week old production reds.

its way too fun here, and is totally addicting! Just love our little group!

Caught up. Cheeka, she is probably still around. Don't think the worst. How are the eggs coming? Any pips?
So much I want to reply to, but not using my cell phone.
Hopefully tomorrow! Night!

Update on my sweet little doeling Sophie.. new pic

Talked to both prior owners. sent pics over to them, and got the same answer. NO WAY my lil Sophie is a pigmy cross. She is way too big and heavy. Her markings/color are nearly perfect. Sugar's prior owner/breeder has an Oberhasli buck and we are all convinced it was him, she will be stopping by to look at Sophie. Her buck is unrelated to both of my "adult" goats, so Sophie can be bred to Bocephus next spring also. No way am I selling her, I have already had several msgs after I posted she was born. She is my first baby goat, and Sugars too! I wanted 2 milkers, so I am just tickled to death.
I found Embden and African geese also. I need one of my DDs to help with pics so I can post. Had to go with goslings, the embden are better managed if they imprint, can be pretty aggressive. I am buried in guinea, had a huge hatch this week from swapped eggs. Am down to using 2 incubators now. finally slowing down for the year

19 eggs today!

I hope she is standing out there in the morning, but I don't hold much hope. it's a bad coyote year for us... and I have seen scat in the yard. at the moment, I can't sleep, I keep hearing things and then I go out to check. Chester isn't barking, but when I took him for his last walk he was catching scents like crazy and sniffing and trying to track... probably rabbits, or deer... those are higher on his radar... all the cats are in which is a relief... I have lost 3 cats to coyotes over the years.

and yes, Australorp was what I was trying to think of when I typed Andalusian... blame it on the missing Violet... brain fart....
The fact that you found no feathers at all gives me some hope. Even a fox or coyote that would grab her and run off would cause at least a few feathers to fall out. I would rule out dogs, hawks, or coons. Keep watching.

I've decided that this whole early morning thing is for the birds... and nothing good came of getting up at the crack of dawn. No Violet and no chicks (yet) she's glued to that nest so tight I couldn't see a thing, but it's pretty quiet. her overgrown chicks are starting to honk but they still peep too, so it's frustrating to not be able to properly hear... I got about 4 hours sleep... it's gonna be a long day. OK, if the coyote or whatever got a good grip on the first grab, wouldn't it be likely to not see feathers? or if it was able to get her from the head first... I know feathers would get snagged on things that it runs passed, I see no feathers anywhere... but I also have no clue where she might have disappeared from... like front or back or side of the house.

cheeka. I am still holding out hope but I am sorry your under this stress.

Jc, I was watching the local news here and I was reading that the state of NJ looked up all the local goat owners and called a few up with a proposal. Apparently only one guy was willing. He brought his goats to a local state park and they created areas for the goats that are fenced off as pens. They are trying to control the poison ivy at the state park with goats. They have signs up saying not to pet the goats because even though they eat it they pass the oils through their skin. People are really happy with them. I had never heard of that and had to share .

I want Turkeys so badly, I keep reading more about them and I want some.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Cheeka don't beet yourself up to much. I had a frizzle bantam that passed last week. I had tried to reintroduced her to the flock. The next morning she was dead. I blame myself. I hope she is found soon.

nah... I won't beet myself up... I can't go out in public all purple... jk - I won't beat myself up either... yes I am one of those spellaholics... I blame it on my Mother. sorry to hear about the loss of your frizzle... it's never easy

she was such a huge chicken...I would put money up that she weighed about 10 lbs. honestly, I think a fox might have had a hard time getting a good grip on her... I'm thinking coyote. nothing that disappears off the top of this hill has ever returned with the exception of one of my cats. he was missing for 6 days. I thought he was dead. he showed up, injured, big bump on his head, missing fur and whiskers... that was years ago now... he's still around, and he hasn't wandered out of sight of the house ever since.

it's raining pretty steady here, my elderly friend put together a quite nasty bag of kitchen scraps for the gang. they are enjoying a big pile of soft fruit, pilaf, cauliflower, and stale bread. there was a second bag... full of moldy yucky unidentifiable stuff... she means well...

I got three eggs again today!
None in a nest, but thats Ok!
Bertha left a big, dark brown
Clarabelle's is small and round
Amelia's eggs are quite unique
But who are we to critique?
The only thing that really matters
Is that the eggs do not shatter!

celebrate.gif

Amelia's egg is on top (buff cochin bantam)
Clarabelle's egg is in middle (buff cochin bantam)
Bertha's in on bottom (Buff O.)
