Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Thanks Cheeka! I fear I am running out of room to separate that many boys. I do see some chasing going on in the 20x40 foot pen, but in the 8x10 foot coop, they are catching the girls! Last week I didn't want to bring the boys to the auction to sell, this week I can't wait until Friday to get rid of them! I guess I would only need a rooster if I wanted to add more to my flock in the event I lost some. So far, the only one I want to keep is the first one I hatched, Johnny Cash, the black Ameraucana!

Sounds like you have it planned out Sully, the thread I was on for the young cream legbars was the CT thread...someone was complaining about them being aggressive too. I know a lot of people have told me its a passed trait. So if they are being overly mean I wouldn't keep them for breeding either. I plan to give mine away if I hatch any males.

So glad everyone is posting...I'm wide awake due to back pain, blah.

I totally agree W4W, she is so awesome! she gave up the 3 other eggs, so I've just taken them away. two felt like they had chicks, one was sloshy.

the little one is so adorable...

wait, I blinked. take another one.

now get one with me and my Mama

the backup chicks... couldn't not take them even tho' I knew she had a hatchling. I will give Peachy's chick a few days to get sturdier before I add the slightly larger chicks, they are bantams, and are quite tiny, even tho' they are a few weeks old. they are very active, don't want baby trampled...

Well I have not gotten any eggs today..... usually the older girls all lay before 3... I have been down to the coop several times today and still don't have anything! None in a nest or in the corner... I hope they don't have a hidden nest anywhere because they have been out since 9:30 this morning and I will probably never find them if theu laid them outside!!!
They are on a 25 hour cycle usually so hang in there. I have days, like today there were only 8 chicken eggs. All my boxes had hens in them so I left it alone at 8pm.

YIKES cheeka they are all precious!

oh my, i couldn't choose

Quote: I have 4 girls that are "favorites" and I have to keep aprons on them. Spike, betsy, bunny and Lil X. If I don't, they get bare backs and shoulders.
So the roos all got spurs trimmed, again and they sure aren't mellowing out

too much time outside

Sally and Sully.... oh yes that is something that is very true. and I forgot to say anything about rooster breeding. Roosters pass on their temperament. absolutely. so... never breed a mean rooster unless you don't care about anything but looks... one particular story... my friends... had the meanest EE Roo, named Boss, he was a horror, to the hens, to people, to their pets... got to the point where the children could not go outside if the chickens were out. then, one day, he kicked Dad particularly hard, on the knee... brought Dad down to the ground. so Boss had to go. they gave me 5 fertile eggs to hatch. got 3 chicks, 1 boy. this one boy is Boss x10! he's already so mean and he's only about 2 months old. they don't even think they can keep him long enough to grow him out for eating!

all my boys are easy... that's what makes it so tough. I could use any of them for breeding. (except for Carl, with that weird neck issue he presented as a chick - it's cleared completely, but I should eat him) Plus 4 of them are teeny tiny bantams. Royce did kick Mylee, but it was because she was messin' around with the broody pen and the chicks. (and I wasn't there...) and really, he left a mark, but he did not kick her very hard. he is huge, has inch and a half long spurs. he could have really done damage, but it seems like he gave her a warning. she's is not afraid of him, she doesn't want to get kicked again, but she's not afraid.. So... if you can sell them on Friday, that would be for the best. if not, you may want to section off a portion of the huge run for them. at least until you can figure out what else to do with them all.

Morning all, thinking about taking a drive to CT today. No word on the eggs being shipped yet....
I'm behind on my reading Sally. Do you have hatching eggs being shipped? Mine are late too but the seller says he should be able to ship tomorrow. "Hens slowed down" was his reason. I guess if you are getting eggs we may end up with birthdays on the same day

Congratulations cheeka on the new chick and chicks. Now a question. What are the chances of the post office x-raying hatching eggs and does it kill the egg? I read on a egg sellers feedback on ebay that the USPS had xrayed his eggs but he left positive feedback for the seller since it wasn't his fault. Could they? Would they? And I guess this means the eggs are dead?
