Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Nice pic Lindz! How do they like the nipple waterers? I made one w a bucket but haven't used it yet. Am waiting til we get the permanent run buildt.

More progress. Also when I locked them in tonight a couple were on the roost. I don't care if they want to take forever to learn to roost but it always kinda cracks me up when they do chicken things. I didn't want to bother them too much shining lights at them but there were at least 2 up there.
 
You can see my nipple waterer in there...it's a 5 gallon bucket sitting on 2 others with 2 nipples in it. They have been using on in various forms since they were little. Sloop nice to not have to be constantly changing their water!

Penny is from a big hatchery and her comb is huge. Most hatcheries don't adhere very closely to the breed Standard, placing more importance on egg laying ability, so other than the color, you can't count on matching the description. Penny's never going to win a ribbon at a show, but she's a great layer and has been healthy. The hatchery American dual purpose breeds (BR, NH, Delaware, RIR, sexlinks, EE) all tend to have the same body shape, but are a different color. My Wyandotte is the only one that has a different shape. (Her and the crazy Leghorn.) Even my BO and BA are similarly shaped, just with more fluff.

Breeders who are dedicated to heritage breed lines, or are breeding toward the Standard of Perfection, are a good source for alternatives to hatchery stock.

w4w thanks for that info. these girls came with a certificate that they could be shown, and my granddaughter may show the reds if i can ever tame them well enough to handle. yet between the 2 i tell them apart (at least for now) because they seem to have 2 different body types. Lucy tall and slimmer, Ethel kind of short and round. They are quiet different from the Rocks who I only tell apart from each other by the fuzzy feathers on Thelma's cheeks that Louise doesn't have. And personality as Thelma is the smarter and friendlier, still wouldn't call them tame yet.

Wait til they start laying. I couldn't go near my silkie at first but now she lets me pick her up and walk around w her!
