Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I brought Rumples out for some supervised time on the grass. She was in heaven. Her kids gathered around and all took a nap together. Chickens are so dang entertaining! :gig I put Rump back in her pen so that I could eat some dinner. Then back out I go with camera in hand for more evening grass time.

Awe I just love rumples!!!!

Hubby called and said that one of Harriet's chicks are missing. It was raining there and he didn't look for it much. Bitty now has 2 chicks so far. My aunt said the other chicks are doing great. I am having fun but I am definitely missing my chicken therapy.

perfect weather day today, we had a blast ranging and treat tossing... Big Broody brought her chick out to grab treats with all of the large fowl - at first I was a bit iffy, but chick did fine, Mama is tough and Royce brought them treats and broke bits of food up before strolling away. bigger babies doing great, still listening to the 2 Mamas but ranging a bit further on their own.

15 Eggs today, lots to deliver tomorrow - I'll be low on stock... stinks that I only have one new large fowl pullet. the bantam pullet is nice, more eggs for me... I was hoping for at least 4 to help carry the winter.

A surprise to to you
A surprise to me
just before bed
Today we laid three!

But there is a "but" (not like the one in cheekas post). I have to take a shower quick but I will explain in a little bit.

OK so tonight I went to check the box one last time for that elusive second egg. Normally I don't go out after they go in for the night so normally I wouldn't have found these til morning..

Boy was I shocked to see 2 eggs on the coop floor! I went around and opened the big door and carefully collected them. One was broken. The other was dented. Both had soft shells. Just enough to add strength to the membrane but not enough to even really crack but it yielded at the slightest pressure.

One was under wilson and one was under penny :(. I am super bummed because not only does this blow my chances for my first real 2 egg day, but if one of them was Penny's I won't get any eggs at all. She laid her egg before 6 am which means she could have laid this rubber egg at 9-10pm. She just didn't finish the shell which if she had kept it in longer it would have been perfect like all her other eggs.

I know it is normal for them to have some kinks to work out but I am really excited to get a 2 egg day so having a no egg day is no fun at all!

The other possibility is that the second rubber egg was Maggie's. That would make me much happier. I kinda doubt it because of its proximity to penny when I found it but I guess we will find out tomorrow. If penny lays an egg then it was Maggie's. If she doesn't then I will assume one of these was hers and I will let the hawk eat them during free range time.

) What is the round thing under BBs beak? Looks like she's eating a bantam egg!

Cheeka - love the picture, how sweet. I will never have a momma raising chicks so I like to see pics of others doing it.

Mortie - progress!

Got up this morning and found an egg. Penny's color, about her size (54 grams, her last few have been 50) but not in her box. She has only used the other box once or twice before so I guess today she felt like a change?

So here are our options as far as to what happened here.

 1. The rubber eggs from late last night were from Maggie and Wilson, and Penny laid like usual this morning
 2. One of the rubber eggs was from Penny and one was from Wilson. I read in another thread that some people's birds have laid a rubber egg and a good egg in one 24 hour period. I find this quite unlikely but along the same vein...
 3. BOTH of the rubber eggs came from Wilson. An almost double yolker, she actually managed to make 2 separate eggs but couldn't hold at least one in long enough to put a full shell on it. I've seen pictures of conjoined rubber eggs, this is not much of a stretch from that. Although if that's the case, it would be fairly uncommon.
 4. The good egg was Wilson's and either she laid one of the rubber ones or Penny laid them both. I only mention it as a remote possibility, I don't believe this is the case. The egg the same color and size as Penny's and I expect the reds to lay a slightly different color than the RSL. Could be wrong, I'm just sayin what I think.

So there you have it. I'm hoping it's #1 because it means any day now I am going to get 2-3 actually edible eggs. Penny is a rock star. Only one slightly thin egg and then perfect ones. Not even a blood spot. Looks like tweedle dee and tweedle dumb are going to take a little longer to iron things out although both of the rubber eggs had perfect insides. The dog enjoyed them.

The hawk is sitting in my neighbor's tree again. I've been hearing it all morning. So much for morning range time.
