Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Lucy laid another egg this morning, and I cracked and fried it while still warm. By my estimation she laid it about one hour later than yesterday's. We had eaten the one from yesterday already. They were both incredibly orange, the yolk was very round, and the white part didn't run everywhere like store-bought. Oh, and they were DE-licious. My husband enjoyed his so much which made me happy. The first egg weighed 43 gm, and the one today weighed 44 grams.

The cuckoo marans (Jackie) stayed in the coop with her most of the time. I think she'll be next since she's squatting like a champ the last few days.

I have gotten 10 eggs/day the last few days. That is up from my average 8 that I was getting for the past month or so. The days are getting shorter, and the temperature is going up. Nothing makes sense, but there you have it!
I had asked a week ago about hatching this winter, or waiting to see how many eggs I got in the spring. A few posts later someone mentioned breeder vs hatchery stock. I had forgotten that I have five Marans that are breeder stock. As long as the 5 Rocks keep laying periodically, I should be fine for a while. Especially with my egg sales down.

Hi MC! I word hatch in winter just because i don't enjoy spending the entire summer waiting for eggs! If I hatch again it will be even earlier than this time. I set my eggs in late Feb. They day I got them was sooooo cold. Brrr!

There is a hawk lurking around. I hear it screaming. Its really putting a damper on free range time here.

I got babies in oct. Put them outside end of Dec and boy was it cold. I did use a heat lamp (I won't this year).

I don't think I'll need to get more babies this winter cause I have 10 younger ones who'll be laying in winter or if the hold out til it gets lighter beg of spring. Tho I suspect 1 if not 2 are boys in the polish group! Heard a crow today!!!!

My breeder broods hers outside year round and she lives farther north than me by about a hundred miles. She is way better equipped for it though. We have a lot of crows here but they don't worry me like the hawk does. I knew there was a hawk in my neighborhood all along but had not seen it since January. Now it's hanging around. If the bird were laying during free range I would worry about the crows getting my eggs though

So I was relaxing in my gravity chair and I opened my eyes and saw that the deck railing parade had gotten a life too close to my head for comfort.
