Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

The girls were feeling fine
Because yesterday they laid nine
You see there are only total ten
So it will be a while before it happens again
Mom and Dad gave a happy sigh
And said "Today we will give you pie"

Please forgive my poor excuse for poetry, but out of 10 girls, I got nine eggs yesterday. We were not sure that our Speckled Sussex was laying, but when we got 4 brown and pink eggs, there was little doubt! I think our only hold-out was our little Polish. We think she had lain eggs, but not sure between her and our Leghorn. Today they get a reward!!!

Awesome eggs!

Not sure about the Exchequers, but my Leghorn laid an extra large egg from almost the very start. I would expect a Polish egg to be smaller, but it's only from comments I've heard.

I am still trying to find a Leghorn hen around here in Summerville, SC. Never thought they would be hard to find.

Speaking of the egg laying process, some of you guys have talked about people that don't want farm eggs because they think the eggs are soiled coming out of the same place the poop comes out.    NOT TRUE!  The eggs are never in the intestinal tract and are never in contact with feces inside the hen.  The end of the oviduct is very near the vent, and there is a section of the oviduct that will extend down through the vent while the egg is laid, keeping it pristinely clean.  The egg is never in the "poop tube".  If it gets dirty, it's from stool hanging around on the outside of the vent, or on the feathers, feet, and nest.  Cool, huh?

I had.made a comment about my neighbors not wanting my diary chicken butt eggs. Naturally *I* know they don't go through the intestines but they are dummies. They suck if I may say so.

So i went outside and saw my RIR making a nest... (the one that i thought laid early in the morning and the egg got crushed) She laid in the nest for about 30min. Then she went in the run for 1h. Hasn't been in the nest ever since... :/

Do you think new layer or her egg got crushed?

No worries, Mortie, you are still ahead of me in the egg-counting game! Lucy laid her 5th egg in a row today, each day a smidge bigger - I've got a food scale. She started out at 43 grams and is up to 49.

I'm still thinking I'll get one from another of my girls any day. Starting to wish all my birds were New Hampshires like Lucy. She has never had a single problem from day one and matured quickly, not to mention being the first layer. Good girl, Lucy.

That's her posterior you see on all my posts. Guess she's my fav.
