Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

No chicks yet. Everyone is enjoying free ranging and Hubby mowed so they are all over the yard. Lots of sunshine and they are stretched out soaking up the rays. Hope that means lots of eggs tomorrow!
Can you hear any peeps from the eggs??

In that last post I counted my eggs before they were laid I'm afraid. I found Wilson in the box and pulled 2 brown eggs out from under her and got 2 blue from the other side. I assumed she was going to lay her egg which would make a grand total of 5 eggs.

I just went out there and did not find her brown egg so she must have just been chilling after laying it. Bummer.

However, I found a blue egg just now which means our blue egg total for the day is 3! Shadow is laying for sure now. Yay! 27 weeks old and finally joins the party!

what a long week! I've missed everyone so much and am psyched for everyone who's adding more flock members... I still have not decided if I will take some pullets from my local friend, I'm so wanting to, but have yet to make the necessary changes so I have room. besides, Silkie Gossamer's eggs are due to hatch next week... she was up yesterday having her meal and I got to see her clutch. she had 8 green eggs, (all Peachy's) and right in the middle was a 9th, cream colored... one of her own, but I have no idea when she laid it, if it stands a chance to hatch or anything...

first week of overtime is finished. I'm wiped and hated every minute of it. the route I have had to do is beautiful to drive, but there's nothing to really photograph. winding, tree lined roads with no view and even to take a pic of the woods has the tall weeds on the banks blocking the best view... so I've been cranky and home late everyday. I still let the flock out most days for the last bit of daylight.

cute happening - yesterday, Hershey the Cat came up and was bumping me and stuff... Brutus was watching. Hershey got lots of patting for bumping so he gave it a try. I just laughed and laughed when I felt the small bumping and looked down.

I adore Brutus. I scooped him up and hugged him and scritched and scratched under his wings... he's really something.

we're hanging in there with eggs too - a few days with only 8 or 9, but today was 14... I probably will take some pullets, the plan is to do some work on the housing situation tomorrow. handyman and sweetie will be up to help with the roof too... decisions decisions............. back to reading! lots to catch up on!!

phew. caught up.

mortie, those egg basket photos are truly wonderful! the first shows their stunning depth of color beautifully and I love your counter top basket!

lindz, I'm with the others on the chicks gender choices... and you know I think the first one is male. it's not just the west coast with the poor gender ratio - last week W4W mentioned that the California thread folks were calling it the year of the cockerel... it seems to be the same on the east coast. at least with you and me... too many cockerels... so not so many eggs this winter, but lots of meat...

3 of the 5 cockerels out of 7 total hatched. fattening them up with a banana pancake.

We added a ladder roost today. The two guineas follow Onyx around all the time. I'm surprised that she doesn't bother them because she tends to be one of the grumpier hens in the flock. She actually tidbits for them. Lol..... I'm afraid that I only have maybe 3 pullets out of 12.

He is so cute. I wish we could keep roosters, but the noise has been too much for the neighbors, so 2 of the Serama cockerels were rehomed this week. We are only keeping the original rooster, who doesn't crow all that much, and a half pint silkied Serama cockerel who doesn't have the lung capacity for much of a crow.

TN, how exciting to be hatching! What breeds did you get? Only 20 days to go. You will have to tell us which is harder, waiting for eggs to hatch or waiting for eggs to be laid!

Lindz, nice looking birds and I love the ladder. The first chick looks like a pullet, but not sure about the second one. Only 3 out of 12? That hurts!

Got home with my 3 new pullets tonight. One jubilee Orpington (project), one Rhodebar, and an olive egger that was put in the mix instead of the 2nd expected Orp that was not looking enough like a pullet! Olive eggs will be cool, a new color for us!

Pics soon!

Any day now.. I have a few "summer pullets" that should start to lay soon. I keep saying another week or 2 for about the last month. However my guess is the April 5th hatch Partridge Chantecler will be first to lay. I picked her up along 3 other younger and 1 2013 Chantecler 2 weeks ago. The 2013 Chantecler was broody when I got her and is now going through molt. The poor hen is all pins... (the 5 Chanteclers were a result of chicken math and I love it and them!)
