Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

MC good luck with your new journey. Definitely pop in and keep us posted! You can get a chicken fix vicariously!

Hi Wishing4wings, I have three birds. One a RIR, 1 a barred rock and one a black australorp. All have bright red combs and wattles. They are checking out the nesting box, but none are squatting. The black is roosting with her tail feathers down is getting very vocal... They all have always had tail feathers way up and bum bum bum softly, but she is squawking quite loudly lately. They have a plastic coop and a 15 x 5 run that they stay in until I get home from work when they free range. I watch them when they are out and have looked for eggs in their favorite spots, and found nothing. I love them as they are but an egg or two would be so exciting!

JW, they are adorable!

MC, I hope you have the greatest year yet - filled with adventure! farming and animals can wait til later years... I'm glad you're looking forward to it!

OK, ugh, I'm dreadfully hooked. I see little sheds and want to load them all up and take them home. I see something and instantly know what I have to do to convert it for the flock... so a pile of scrap is like winning the lottery!

now. on a very sad note... I hate to spoil a nice Saturday (although it is Not nice here... rainy and chilly)

Super Broody Mama, the Magnificent Peach died today. she was listless on the nest so I felt her good, she was empty in the crop and her belly felt funny. I brought her in, gave her a warm bath, and massage. got some gunk out and didn't want to leave her home alone so I took her to work. only 2 people saw her in the car, one looked at me like I was nuts, the other is my friend, so she patted Peach and wished her well. anyway... I got back home and was setting up a basket and heater for her when she flapped a few times and flew away from this life. she had her head nestled in my neck. I can't stand it. not my Peach.

I am so sorry you lost her!

It was good that you ware able to keep her comfortable at the end.

thanks bekka and ron, she was a real gem! only about 28 months old, mother to a dozen beauties from other hens eggs, so I am glad Gossy took one more round of eggs - 6 of the 7 newest chicks here are Peachy's line. it's not easy to get a necropsy done around here in a timely manner. I may freeze her carcass tho'... for now, she is in the fridge til I decide what to do. the rest of the flock is doing just fine. either she ate something funky (which I kind of doubt, or I'd have more dying... they all eat the same stuff) she may have been egg bound, or had an egg break internally, or perhaps her little heart... I don't know.

I have a bazillion pictures of her. it'll be a couple of months before I can look at them without getting weepy. maybe longer. maybe forever.

Some of Harriet's babies.....

Definitely a little roo!

Another definite little roo.

Pretty sure this is a little roo as well.

Pullet I think.... I hope anyway!

She has 5 more, but I didn't get pictures of them before my phone died......

And on to the rest of the crew!

The blue cochin girls!
