Scrambles, how do you know that? I haven't been able to find an article that says anything like that and I was just saying to hubby today I wish I knew the details.
Both dh and I have our CCW permits. Neither of us has ever carried, aside from transporting occasionally. If we did, we would never ever carry with one in the chamber. We have at times had our .45 loaded in the house but never with one in the chamber. It's a slide action that is so stiff my kids couldn't operate it anyway. I can do it with a lot of effort and it's even pretty stiff for dh. But never one in the chamber. We feel like if we were carrying and there wasn't time to rack one, you're kinda screwed anyway. It takes a split second to work the slide so we see no reason to leave a round in the chamber when you're just grocery shopping.
99% of the time our hand guns are in the safe, unloaded. I know a lot of people say "what good is a locked up gun" but I don't feel the need to have loaded guns all over the house with my kids around. They've been taught proper gun safety but i don't feel the need to take risks. We have our first line of defense already. If anyone wants to come past my big, hackles raised, loud barking german shepherd...well I say bring it. With her letting us know the person is there, we'll have plenty of time to unlock the safe and grab a mag
So I feel like we are pretty middle of the road about it. We have a couple of guns and we have our ccw permits, but we don't feel the urge to pack heat at wal mart (or anywhere else for that matter) and we aren't the type to leave loaded guns laying around in case we have to blow someone up who is coming into our house or anything like that. We enjoy target shooting with them and it's kind of a hobby that my husband and my dad share, so we're good.
It's a sad, sad situation. I feel the worst for the little boy who will find out sooner or later what happened. I hope when he does, he has the wisdom to understand that it wasn't his fault.
