Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

The wood ash is my main treatment... De and coconut oil just as a "feel good" on vent area and de in coop.

I'll resort to frontline or similar if that doesn't work after a few clean outs/bath. But I won't use any sort of sevin dust....

I'm trying to stay as natural as possible wo going totally insane either way. I figure it's a balance either way.

Start there and see if it works. If not let me know.

Ron I'll let you know after 3 dustings the status as if that doesn't work I'll need some next step advice.

Ahhhhh I have mites! I saw some on an egg so checked butts tonight and saw them. I wouldn't say it's an infestation yet as not all chickens had them and I didn't see any on the roosts or anywhere else. However everybody got their vents dusted w wood ash and de. Thankfully it'll be cold this week so I'll save all the ash we get. Next weekend they'll get a full body bath and I'll clean and dust the coop as well as coat the roosts w coconut oil. Hopefully that'll be enough at this point in time.

Oh no, CLindz! I HATE those little bloodsuckers.

It's important to know what type you are dealing with. Northern fowl mites live on the chickens and in my opinion, are easier to get rid of. If it's red roost mites, you might be in for a bit of a battle since they live and lay eggs in the coop by day (look for them heading toward the chickens on the roosts at night). They get in the tiniest little cracks, and even after months without seeing anything, and no chickens or birds in the location, conditions become right and thousands of miniscule mites hatch and swarm looking for a meal. I wanted to stay as chemical free as possible, but these things can kill (my poor Spot

), and the only thing that's helped me keep them under control is to spray the coops with flea spray every few months. Broody hens are magnets for them too.

Hopefully you've caught it early and will be an easy fix for you, but keep checking, especially when the warmer spring weather comes. This from a sadder but wiser veteran mite battler.

I think I managed to dodge mites last summer. I can't imagine there would be any with sub zero temps. It's chilly out right now. Actual temp -6, "real feel" is -27. I just went out and looked at the birds. They blinked at me as if to say "Stop shining that light in here, we're trying to sleep." Tough as nails, I tell ya.

Good luck with your mites Clindz!

Thanks guys!!!!

I didn't see any red ones on the chickens and I checked the coop/roosts last night and this morning (both times pitch black outside) and didn't see any evidence of mites on the wood. But I'll be diligent over the next few weeks checking in case I'm missing them. Don't want to assume they aren't there.

The mighty mite battle is on!!!!
