Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

karl, I use anything that's free. lawn clippings, fallen pine needles, fallen leaves, hay that I save from more grass clippings... and I always run out before winter ends... so I use straw after that.

eta, we have an organic dump nearby. I get truckloads of leaves and wood chips from there. if I had more room to store stuff, I would get another couple of loads... but I don't so it is always covered in snow and ice by the time I need some... and I can't get more

Welcome Karl. I use pine shavings in the coop and sand in the run. Very low maintenance.

Cheeka that baby is so cute!

I'm totally done w polish babies. My two are idiots. Well one smarted up but the other not so much. So after going missing for 3 days a neighbor down the street shows up w my baby in a dog crate. At 2 mos I was impressed w how far she got and the fact she survived outside 3 nights as we def have foxes in the area. Well anyway yesterday I let her back out after 5 days in jail. Worried all day and then when I locked them up she wasn't in the coop w her sisters... Thought for sure she packed up and left again. But...found her all snuggled up w the big girls!

clindz, I think that behavior would cause me to have a breakdown of sorts. she's one lucky girl to slip under the radar so many times! ever see the Croods? she reminds me of the ploy used to get past the predator plants. she's a flower. foxes don't eat flowers.
 
so... my stupid car wouldn't start this morning. I decided to not get stressed despite losing about $230 for the day, and got myself covered. doing what I never do! taking the day off! so far, I've banged out the dishes, 2 loads of laundry, vacuumed the downstairs rooms, & put lots of clothes away that were washed the other day... of course, I had the animals cared for before 7:15...

I have some nice breadcrumbs from my fancy seeded Gluten Free bread and brought the baggy out to Esther - she has 2 more chicks! both black, one with a bit of white on its breast! she has 5 so far, could be more under her, I didn't poke. I nuzzled all 5, and doled out the crumbs. I'll get back out for photos in a bit. if I'm going to be lax about the day... the chores have to be finished, and I'm due to flip the laundry, change my linens and vacuum upstairs. once all that is finished, the rest of the day is mine to be a bum!

WOO HOO! Day off, sometimes when things like that happen, it's for a reason and apparently the universe thought you needed a day! Have a great one!!! Wish I had your energy!!!
