Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

OK, so last night, when I was locking the coop, I found this filthy, tattered piece of paper in the run. There was some scribbled writing on it that was barely legible, kind of like, well, like hen scratch! Brought it in and deciphered it as best I could this morning. Here's what the note said:

We’re doing fine. We’re doing great!
Today we laid seven. Tomorrow will be eight.

We make a huge ruckus, we squawk really loud.
We’re laying lots of eggs, makin' mama very proud.

Biscuit lays a white egg, Monkey lays blue,
The rest of lay brown, so you can’t tell who!

Grace hasn’t started, but we don’t give her flack,
She was one sick chick and it really set her back.

We love our nice home and our big chicken yard,
But we want something else (though asking is hard).

We love all the goodies in addition to our feed,
Watermelon, blackberries, greens and seed,
Barley and tomatoes, it’s all we really need,
But we’re going to ask, in fact we’re going to plead!

We really are good Mom. We really do try.
Please Mom, please won’t you make us a pie?

They make a good case, but I'm not sure how they found out about the pie thing! Just like my kids.Friends get something so they want it too!

Guess I better get started making a pie. Don't want them writing complaints to Chicken Protective Services!

LOL......GET THEM A PIE MOM........Nice poem. Thats great. When I get home from work I will post a picture of the pie I made for mine yesterday.

They kept their word. 8 eggs today!

Well, my pie was not so creative, but healthy! (Spoken like a true mom.

Yummy yum yum

When I asked my son to help me make a pie, he asked "What kind?" I replied "Chicken pie!" and his face fell.
"Ahw"

Wishing4Wings, now that looks Gourmet! love the pics!

my babes are nestled all snug in their coop,
I've raked and scraped and cleaned up the poop.
the nest boxes are lined with fresh grass and flowers
I've done all I can, I'm held in their powers.

I've looked for eggs, I've looked for a note,
I've found only feathers, that merely float.
I've seen to their needs, not a thing out of place...
the only thing missing is a Pie, with a Face!

Tomorrows creation will be crafted with care,
I'll tap OK's mind and give it some flair!
tomatoes for eyes and lettuce for hair
crackers for ears, and bread... do i dare?

My bread is expensive, it's all gluten free
6 buck for a loaf... it should all be for me...
I guess I can spare one little slice
If it gets me some eggs, it sure would be nice!

My babes were all hatched on day 20 of April,
They all should lay soon, but I doubt that they will
I believe they will lay in February next year
during an ice storm... when I'm not even here.

I'll be stuck on the roadside, frozen to the mailbox
Why did I get hens... I should've just stuck with cocks...!
Their feathers have value, for fly tying and stuff
I could make money and still have butts full of fluff...

Yet, hens I do have, and so I shall wait.
the day will arrive and that day will be great.
Wilma, Rose, Betty, Violet, Isis and Blu
The one who can't lay, is Royce the lone Roo.

cheeka is the master! Your girls are about 5 weeks younger than mine, so the eggs will come any day now! Have you noticed combs and wattles getting bigger and redder? Have you noticed butts getting wider and fluffier? Have you noticed anyone getting cranky and grumpy? All signs of impending eggs! I can't wait to see what color eggs you get from your pretty EE.

Pie is pie, but pie with a face..... well, that's egg worthy! Definitely worth a try and a sacrificial slice of bread!

Rose and Violet are the RIR's ~ Rose is sweet, Violet has been grumpy since hatch... neither of them is really red in the face or comb, yellowy/pinkish... but their combs are starting to poke up more, no new extra fluff in the butt and no squatting.

Wilma and Betty are the BR's ~ Betty is quite red in the face and comb, and it's getting nice and pokey, nice fluffy butt and squats, Wilma is pinking up nicely, gives me long bwaaaaaaaaaak's, but she's a trickster, she's been squatting for me since she was a month old... she loves massages and fluffs up every single feather on her body... it's very very endearing. neither of them is ever grumpy, they are very personable birds who enjoy being held... I'm thinking Betty will be the first...

Blu B'ree and Isis are the EE's ~ slight pink in the cheeks, but their tiny pea combs aren't showing much color yet. They have extremely fluffy butts that definitely seem larger these last few days. Blu squats, Isis... not so much... and no grumpy behavior altho' Isis, who normally cool with being held has been a bit stand-off-ish...

here's the "being held" order
1. Wilma, always. she flies into my arms.
2. Blu, unless Betty insists...
3. Betty
4 Isis
5. Rose
6. Royce, the roo...
7. Violet. she would prefer to never be caught, and unlike the less willing, she is not nice once she is caught. she struggles and scratches... so i usually let her be. she is fine with a glancing brush of her wing, or a brief stroke of her tail... she was the first to escape the new enclosure bc i neglected to firmly latch the inside hook. Round and round the house we went, and when i got almost close enough to catch her, she made the first real adult sounding cluck of the whole group...! I laughed so hard, she got away, but when i circled the house again, she was waiting at the enclosure door, eager to get back inside and away from me and my big stick... lol (btw, i just use the stick to "guide" the birds, never to swat them...)

Sounds like a couple of yours are getting really close! The red combs and wattles seem to happen really quick, and not all of mine got cranky, but my SLW got so bad she has been renamed Grumpus. My mob comes running any time I get near the fence, always looking for treats. I keep a chicken stick too, but it is more to make sure the dogs respect the gate boundary and that the girls don't decide to make a run for it.

Come on girls, don't let Cheeka down,
Just one little egg will wash away her frown.

Wilma and Betty with your stripes of gray,
If you would lay some eggs you would make Cheeka's day!

Isis and Violet don't make me say it twice,
Please produce some eggs, and try to be nice!

Rose and Blu will try their best
And soon you'll be finding some eggs in the nest.

And Royce, he's excused 'cause he's a roo.
He's not concerned with eggs, got more important things to do!!

Don't forget to make that pie!!!!

SEVEN......Roger is holding out. I told her we were going to New York for the grand opening of the CAMP (Cheeka's Almost Manmade Paradise) for chickens. Seems Roger wanted to present cheeka with a very special egg for her efforts in helping others and improving the life of others. She is a little disappointed but she will be fine. I told her I would send you her picture instead. Roger is a BR.

my Betty's comb and waddles are itty bitty compared to Roger's! but Blu on the left and Isis on the right have slightly pinkish pea combs, and their beards... i don't think they have waddles underneath...
(Wilma's are the same size as Betty, but not as reddish) will they suddenly "sprout" or am i looking at eggs in Spring?
